What do i need to make a raspberry pi portable?

Thu Oct 10, 2013 10:18 pm

Im making my own raspberry pi portable and Im gonna use the...well some of the things Ben did on his like his battery, the screen, teensie 2.0 (or however you spell it). But I have several problems...1. I don't have a 3d printer. 2.i don't know how/where to find and use tack switches. 3.i don't know if i should use his battery or another one...(trying not to use usb portable power.). 4.im starting to get hungery for pi. and 5. im trying to make a keyboard that slides out from the back,im using the small usb keyboard from amazon with the touch pad on the right. finaly 6. ...im trying to put...well want to put...built in wifi ,but im also gonna desolder some parts like he did and add some.
may someone tell me what they recomend i use?
Edit: Oh,yeah i have two more. Im also getting a usb joystic...well three more. 7.I want to make the cords from the 3.5 inch back up ar camera soldered on to the board...like how ben done his. 8.i also want to put in a power switch but i dont know where to put it...i dont want the one that plugs into the mini usb port. 9.I don't know how to solder the battery to the pi...once again...kinda like how been done his...i think im going to use AA battery for my project but there is too many risks, like if one battery has more power in the other. 10.(sorry i lied  i want to add speakers but i don't know how,not the speakers you just plug in,I want built-in speakers in it...it don't have to be great...just on like those iphone speakers. lastly,(not promising its my last.) im going to put in berryboot...so my portable can have xbmc, mame, android, and a desktop image...good?

Hey there! Glad to see another portable Pi maker. I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can:

I don't have a 3d printer
If you don't own a 3D printer, you can have your model printed online and shipped right to you. You may want to shop around to see who's more affordable or closest to you. Just search for "3d printing services" as a start. This one seems pretty good, but don't stop there!

i don't know how/where to find and use tack switches
They're fairly cheap. Just search for "tact switch(es)" or "tactile switch(es)" and you'll find plenty of places to buy. I recommend Adafruit if you're in the US. Their prices are very fair, considering they are based in New York. Not only that, but they also have awesome tutorials online. Also, if you stick around until Saturday @ around 10pm EST, they host an "Ask an Engineer" session, where they release a 10% coupon for their store.
Order some buttons
Learn how they work

i don't know if i should use his battery or another one...(trying not to use usb portable power.)
I'm not sure if I can help you there. You'll just have to make up your mind! :p

im trying to make a keyboard that slides out from the back,im using the small usb keyboard from amazon with the touch pad on the right.
Sounds cool. Kind of like they do on some cellphones, right?

im trying to put...well want to put...built in wifi
I *highly* recommend the one from ModMyPi. It's low power enough to not need a powered hub, works out of the box with very little setup, and is nearly as fast as Ethernet. The only downside is that it's European priced, and you may have to wait half an eternity for it to arrive, but it's worth the price and wait!

Good luck on your project!

1. ben also made a video on how to make things without a printer, he used a plastic material that can easily be cut with a razor and had the base frame be aluminium which can easily be bent and cut. or 3d printing services online, or just get a project box from radioshack or something

edit: i forgot, also there is this thing called polymorph (or instamorph) and basically you buy it and its a bunch of little beads then when you heat them up they get soft, and very very workable, after it cools down it becomes solid again and pretty sturdy.

2. lots of places sell tact switches, or if you have an old tv, radio, anything with buttons there's you can check to see if they are small enough, or good enough quality and use them. or dont use tactile (i dont really like them) and get an old controller and cut the pcb into pieces and use them, controllers generally use the rubber padded button things, all you would need to do is solder wires to the + and - on the pcb for each button, and they generally share a common ground

3. usb power is probably cheaper and easier (no smart charger) i would just buy a cheap usb power pack and rip it apart, it would be the same size.

5. not sure. i know someone made an xbox chatpad work on the pi, maybe look into that. if you use a teensy then you can make the pi recognize it as a normal mouse and keyboard and just have the mouse be a joystick. then just have a small keyboard.

6. i always see those tiny wifi adapters that are basically the size of the usb alone, you could just rip it apart and solder it directly to the pi(after getting rid of the usbs)
