can i emulate ps2 games?

Sun May 12, 2013 4:19 pm

PS2

299 MHz processor
147.456 MHz and graphics clock
32 MB RAM
4 MB eDram

compared to Pi
it should be able to emulate games can anyone tell me if it can or not and were i would find the emulator for it.
System Specs: Processor: AMD FX Bulldozer 6100 Ram: Corsair Vengeance DDR3-RAM 1833 MHz Graphics: SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 7770 GHz Edition OC 1GB GDDR5 Storage: 2TB HDD 64GB SSD 640GB HDD portable.

Are you asking if the RPi is capable of Emulating a PS2? Or a PS2 an RPi?

General rule for CPU emulation of hardware x (in this case PS2) on hardware y (raspberry pi) is that hardware y must be 10 times as powerful as x. If you go on clockspeed for the processor alone (not accurate comparison due to architecture differences) then the pi is 5 times underpowered for the job.

That is a generalisation of course, not entirely accurate. There are certain features about some platforms that make the easy to emulate on other particular platforms (N64 emulation on the PSP for example, both are MIPS based systems which massively simplified the CPU emulation stage, a level of emulation was still needed but not as much as emulation MIPS on ARM). There are also things that make it harder to emulate a certain platform on another, for example x86 emulation on ARM, the x86 instruction set is far more complex than ARM (infact x86 is categorised as a Complex instruction set computer, CISC, whereas ARM is RISC - reduced instruction set) and it ends up being very difficult to emulate x86 on ARM platforms with usable speeds. MIPS (PS2) on ARM (pi) is fair game but the 10x rule will still be sitting there in the way.

We don't even have N64 emulation to this point. SNES emulation is still hit and miss. PS2 ain't happening.

Both use open gles 2.0 , so a port of source code might not be technically impossible should a developer be minded to do it, but the ps2s OS is doubtless very different to the Pi's - however there was a linux port for the ps2 for homebrew developers once upon a time...

As you can pick up a ps2 for £20 these days, why not just buy one from cash converters - I did, the games are like £1 except for Shadow of the Colossus which go for around £16.

Kiss backwards compatability and 2nd hand games bye bye with the PS4 though...

So off-topic but Shadow of Colossus is such a great game. The camera controls are a pain though. I wish there were a way to modify that.

Possibly if you coded one that worked on a raspberry pi cluster.

Sorry, I know this is way off topic but I've already got my fire-proof suit on so feel free to flame me. It's not quite that simple. The x86 instruction set most definitely is CISC, whereas modern x86 hardware cores are actually RISC.

Back on topic...

I highly doubt it'll happen - the Pi just doesn't have the processing grunt. It can probably handle the graphics, but it can't handle the rest of the hardware emulation.

I made a ps4 emulator for the pi that means i am capable of emulating x86 on an arm cpu
By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.
Michael Jackson enthusiast.
I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.

So the main issue that keeps popping up is proccessing power. A week later and we get pi2, with a massive proccessor update! How are our chances looking now? From my own limited expireince I would predict possible, but slow. Any other opinions?

Well, the only PS2 Emulator I know of is pcsx2, there is a Linux flavour version, but it requires an Intel/AMD compatible CPU. My 3.4GHz Quad Core PC just about runs it to a level of Mupen64plus-rpi because as mentioned above it will only run on two Cores. Additionally, a pretty beefy 3D GPU is needed where as the Broadcom's is primarily for HD Video decoding.

See ric_rpi's (programmer of Mupen64plus-rpi) comment in this thread
