RetroPie - 4 player multitap Snes

Wed Jan 30, 2013 2:41 am

Hi,
I would like to start by thanking Petrockblog for is walktrough as well as aloshi's readme and Themaister's readme.

Petrockblog : https://github.com/petrockblog/RetroPie-Setup
Aloshi : https://github.com/Aloshi/EmulationStation
Themaister : https://github.com/Themaister/RetroArch

The problem starts when I want to use 4 usb joypads with a usb hub. Can't seem to be able to play with more then 2 players.
What i did:
Configure 4 controllers in the Retropie/config/all/retroarch.cfg
I made sure the config was right using retroarch-pheonix.

What i tried:
adding --multitap or -4 in the .emulationstation/es_systems.cfg (for the snes starter)
running the game in retroarch-phoenix with the port 2 on the multitap

No solutions yet !

Thanks for looking at my problem !

I'm also curious about this. I've been able to successfully play 4-player games in MAME through RetroArch, so I know it's possible, I just haven't been able to make it work in NES or SNES games. Any help on this front would be appreciated.

Can you play 4 player on a system that only supported 2 player?

Yes. Both the NES and SNES supported 4/5 players through the use of a multitap device on certain games.

I can't even get 2 controllers working in games that support multitap - for example all the Super Bomberman games. Both my controllers work great in other games like Street Fighter 2, but in the Bomberman-games, the second controller is totally dead.

My 4 controllers dare OK in "jstest" and configure in RetroArch.

Unfortunatly I have the same like you...

Have-you solved your problem?

Thank you for your answer.

Now I'm really exited to play multiplayer's game with friends. :-)

Did anyone ever get 4 controllers to work with a SNES emulator in retropie? I have two SNES like USB controllers and thinking of getting two more but don't want to waste my money if its not going to work.

Hi,
I spent a lot of time on my Raspberry for getting SNES bomberman working with 4 players with the RetroPie setup and it doesn't work at all. (Only two players, others players don't show up)
Everything is fine with mame, tmnt2 and gauntlet work both perfectly, but with Snes it's another story.
Is there someone who succeeded to set 4 players with snes section ?
Thanks!

Hello Everybody.
As i encountered the same Problem i used some time for research.
1. SNES Games perform a check if the multitab (SNES PORT REPLICATOR) is connected, before a third player is allowed.
2. the underlying emulation libretro supports the emulation of the Multitab
3. As the SNES only has 2 Ports there is no use in defining 3 Players with Joyid 0,1,2

To allow a 3-controller-setup for SNES it should be possible to configure a multitab within retroarch.cfg
Unfortunately i have no idea how to excactly do this. Maybe we can figure it out together.

Code: Select all

# Sets which libretro device is used for a player.
# Devices are indentified with a number.
# This is normally saved by RGUI.
# Device IDs are found in libretro.h.
# These settings are overridden by explicit command-line arguments which refer to input devices.
# None: 0
# Joypad (RetroPad): 1
# Mouse: 2
# Keyboard: 3
# Generic Lightgun: 4
# Joypad w/ Analog (RetroPad + Analog sticks): 5
# Multitap (SNES specific): 257
# Super Scope (SNES specific): 260
# Justifier (SNES specific): 516
# Justifiers (SNES specific): 772

# input_libretro_device_p1 =
# input_libretro_device_p2 =
# input_libretro_device_p3 =
# input_libretro_device_p4 =
# input_libretro_device_p5 =
# input_libretro_device_p6 =
# input_libretro_device_p7 =
# input_libretro_device_p8 =

Here a part of retroarch.cfg
Maybee its possible to define the multitab here as device for p2 and to use another player configuration like joyid 0,2,3.
I will fool around with it a bit. If somebody comes to a solution, please post it here.

Hi all,
Excuse me, if I reply to an old post, but I still couldn't find a solution myself.
Were you able to solve the problem yogi_tud ?

Thank you very much!

A bug was recently patched in the snes9x_next core
if you download the source and compile it and replace the existing core's so file it should work
https://github.com/libretro/snes9x-next
to compile it run

Code: Select all

make -f Makefile.libretro
*i have only compiled it for amd64 and it did work

All right,
So 4 player support should be working now for the SNES, as in being able to play bomberman !?

Hi,

I tested the snes 9x core and it doesn't work with 4 controllers. I tried to configure retroarch with the special snes input 257, the core accepts it but it will always consider controller 2 inputs as controller 2, 3, 4 and 5 inputs (when you press start on controller 2, you will insert coin for 4 players at once)

The second issue is that snes9x core is really, really laggy on RPi. I'll stay on pocketsnes libretro for now :)

As described here:
http://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/top ... post-95739

you can enable the multitap option in the retroarch.cfg in order to make it work for SNES.
Unfortunately there is no multistep support for PSX ATM.
