Enough Pi for MAME

I want to build a Mame machine (Retropie). Must I use a Pi 4B or is a 3B good enough? How much RAM needed?

Lakka may be a better option, it is developed to be just enough Operating System to run RetroArch, and compatible with all Raspberry Pi SBCs:

ISTR I use a Pi1 in my Picade running Mame, but I only play 80's classics which don't need a lot of power.
