RetroPie crashing the desktop on boot

Fri Jun 08, 2018 4:40 am

I just installed RetroPie 4.4 on my 3B with the latest Stretch. I installed in manually, intending to switch between the desktop and EmulationStation at will.

I have my Pi configured to boot to the desktop for a custom user account (not the default 'pi').

Now, when I boot my computer, I get the RetroPie splash screen and then it boots into the desktop, as normal. However, after about 10 seconds, the desktop crashes, dumping me into a black text console screen. And, oddly, the console is logged in to the 'pi' user.

From the console, I can manually restart the desktop with 'startx', and that doesn't crash.

Any thoughts for how I can avoid crashing the desktop on boot? uRight now it's not too much of a problem, because I want to start booting to the console anyway. But it seems odd, and I'd like to be able to boot straight to the desktop if I want to. Setting the autoboot option in retropie-config.sh to desktop for my user account doesn't fix anything.
