If you are running raspbian, you can play gnuchess in an X window. You will need to install gnuchess, xboard, and or eboard and fairymax.

Just issue this command as root: apt-cache search chess

That will produce a number of options. I played with xboard and found it challenging but a little slower than a more robust computer. I'm not very good anyway so it gives me more time to think.
