Wolfenstein 3D (Original).

Fri Oct 12, 2012 3:22 pm

I am trying to find any information on porting the original Wolfenstein to PI. It would think it should be playable. I'd like to play it naively instead of through DosBox or anything else.

Have done a few searches and I'm coming up empty.

Thanks,
jon

Hi,

I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but it seems to be what you're looking for:

http://www.chaos-software.de.vu/

You'd need to download the source code and build it ... looks like you'd need to install libsdl-mixer1.2-dev, at least (going from memory, not sure if that's exactly the right name).

Argh. :?

No trouble building this one, but I haven't been able to get it running. It complains about not finding the data files (which, from the readme, should be in the same directory as the wolf3d binary).

Its a little odd in that you have to compile a different version for each release of Wolfenstein 3D -- as in demo 1.1, 1.4, full Apogee 1.4, id 1.4, Spear of Destiny demo / full, and so on. You do that by editing version.h.

I've tried both the 1.4 demo and full versions, as well as the spear demo, changing version.h and rebuilding for each, but it always says it can't find the data files.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I've tried the data files from the wolf3d 1.4 demo, downloaded from the 3D Realms site here:
http://www.3drealms.com/downloads.html

As well as the data files (*.WL6) from the full version purchased here:
http://www.buy3drealms.com/

Using the Windows, this version works with my data files from the full version above:
"Win32 binary for Full 1.4 Apogee version (132 kB, not tested)"

But it always says "NO WOLFENSTEIN 3-D DATA FILES to be found!" on Linux.

 ... looked at the source ... it looks for lowercase filenames only (*.wl6 instead of *.WL6).

OK so got it working finally, no thanks to the documentation.

If you're using the full version of Wolf3D 1.4 from 3D Realms (the registered download for purchase here) then you edit version.h and only leave this line uncommented under the "Defines used for different versions" section:

#define CARMACIZED

And all the filenames (*.WL6 in this case) need to be changed to all lowercase and placed in the same directory as your wolf3d binary.

Thanks for the input. I have successfully gotten it compiled and running. Wife will be happy. Her all time favorite game.

Hi,
unfortunately the source files in the first post are no more available... any mirror or alternative?
(or directly a binary :)

Thank you very much!

Old post, I know, but for posterity the source may be found on the internet archive:

or on github:

I have published a tutorial on installing wolf4sdl at the link below.

http://dosonthepi.blogspot.co.uk/2015/0 ... f4sdl.html

I have found a way of changing the source code to configure a game controller. If you're interested, then let me know.

It appears that you may not have the SDL development libraries installed on your system. Try the following.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2-dev libsdl-image1.2-dev libsdl-mixer1.2-dev libsdl-ttf2.0-dev
I've updated the tutorial. Apologies, I assumed most folk would be using Retropie which has the libraries pre-installed.

I have published the tutorial describing how to configure game controllers in Wolf4sdl.

http://dosonthepi.blogspot.co.uk/2015/0 ... f4sdl.html

Please let me know how you get on, especially if you are using controllers other the PS3 dualshock.
