Aeon Alpha

I just ported my multiplayer space shooter.

Performance:

RPi 2 ~15 fps.
RPi 3 ~25 fps.
RPi 3+ ~33 fps.
RPi 4 ~48 fps.

For comparison:

Old PC ~300 fps.
New PC ~500-800 fps.

You need:

- A Raspberry Pi 3+.
- The recent release of Raspbian (2018+).

Instructions:

- Enable the experimental OpenGL driver and restart with:
sudo raspi-config (Advanced Options - GL Driver - Fake KMS)
- Install these:
sudo apt-get install libalut0 libalut-dev openjdk-11-jdk
- Download the game: http://aeonalpha.com/aeon.zip
cd Downloads
unzip aeon.zip
cd aeon
./raspberrypi.sh

Aeon Alpha doesn't run on a raspberry pi 2?
AA need oracle java in other PC GNU/Linux? OpenJDK isn't enough?

It runs on RPi 2 but the framerate is too low ~10...

I haven't tested OpenJDK, but as a general rule I always use the original Java for best performance.

Edit: Now OpenJDK is your best option.

With the latest raspbian upgrade performance went from 20 to 5 FPS! :(

? Works fine for me. I'm sure that HDMI being broken would have been flagged up....

Is this firmware from rpi-update? That is bleeding edge stuff and you should only use it if you have a specific reason. Are you using the new 3D driver?

Yep and yep... My screen goes blue like it always does then black again. It didn't before the rpi-update. How do I 1) rollback or 2) install the rpi-update I had before?

Ok, back to 30 FPS with RPi 3, 2017-04-10 lite release and fake KMS!

And holy &%$# now Java uses pulse audio so sound works 100% too!

Works now! Add audio_pwm_mode=2 to /boot/config.txt

There now the game works 99% on the rpi with sound at 30 FPS!

Just add audio_pwm_mode=2 to /boot/config.txt

Thx to Anholt for OpenGL fixed pipeline graphics + jdb and Oracle for mixer sound!

The only tiny flaw left is that the "text to voice" stopped working!

With latest Raspbian and 3B+ gets you flawless experience on Raspberry with 33-34 FPS "smoothness" and thermal situation under control!

Only the text to speech is lagging a bit, but that's ok... Edit: on RPi 4 speech does not lag any more, seems out-of-order execution is really important for that?

Sometimes the game just freezes X when started on the new Pi 4.

Maybe it has something to do with audio:

AL lib: (EE) oss_open_playback: Could not open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory


Installing alsa-oss fixes that problem, the lockup still occurs.

This is what happens in Xorg.log, I'm pretty sure it's related to these since the lockup always occurs immediately after the last of these:

Edit: I don't know where to look deeper, and also some way to restart X without having to cycle power would help!

Edit2: just to confirm my suspicion, buster works fine on a RPi 2 so this is a problem with the new RPi 4 GPU and/or it's drivers.
