Portable Emulator

Tue Jun 14, 2016 1:36 pm

Hi,
I wanted to make a portable emulator.
I informed myself and found this: PIGRRL 2 https://learn.adafruit.com/pigrrl-2/overview
But I have never dealt with the raspberry or anything like it so I have some questions:
1. Are there better alternatives than the PIGRRL 2?
2. Wich raspberry is the best for my project. I found out the pi 3 is way more powerfull than the pi 2 but also uses more energy.
The energie/power rate of both devices is equal.
7.9s * 420mA = 3318 mAs for Pi2
4.5s * 720mA = 3240 mAs for Pi3
Written here : http://raspi.tv/2016/how-much-power-doe ... ed-to-pi2b
Does this result work for emulators or only for special tasks?
I need a pi that can emulate everything till n64 and it would be good if it can play some n64 games too, but also doesn't require to much energy to run.
3.If I use the PIGRRL 2 the display size will only be 2,8". Is it possible to get it to 3,5" or more, or is 2,8" enough?
4. Also the screen there is a touchscreen. What for?
5. I myself dont have a 3d printer so I looked for a way to get the case for the PIGRRL 2 and found a few on ebay. Are they worth buying or should I look somewhere else?
6. And the last question... How many mAh should the battery/akku have to get a decent playtime.
Thanks in advance for your response!

you can build a pi handheld console emulator out of most old handhelds, the most common one is to turn an old broken Gameboy into a pi-boy, there are also versions using a game-gear and Gameboy advance version using a pi zero. I have also seen pics about of handhelds built out of simple ply-wood.

screen size depends on what case you are planning to use, I'm building a game-gear handheld so I'm using a 3.2" screen.

always buy a decent screen from a decent supplyer, adafruit make a really good selection of screens for the pi and they work perfectly with little effort to get setup,
a good screen wont be cheap but its worth the cost.
Q; How many Windows users does it take to fix a Linux problem??

Thanks for the quick response!
Of course I would love to turn an original broken Gameboy into an emulator, but I think for a newbie like me it's a bit to hard to realise such a project. Thats why I searched for easier ones and found the PIGRRL 2 .
Also if I use the GameBoy I would need to somehow mount two extra buttons to the case for playing gba games.
And I dont know how to do that.
