RetroPie / Rasplex Dual-Boot Image

Hi.

Hope you all don't mind a separate post for this but I felt it would get lost and be out of sight in my Retropie / KODI post.

So here is a link to my Rasplex / RetroPie dual-boot installer:

It uses NOOBS to install both partitions and provides seamless switching between both operating systems. I created a Plex theme and designed a Rasplex logo myself, as the ones I found on the net didn't quite fit right in Emulation Station.

Its worth noting that Rasplex, whilst fundamentally based on OpenELEC, does not contain all the same functionality as OpenELEC does, in fact OpenELEC can directly use 'Bash' scripts where Rasplex uses 'Python'. This means that the script I created to switch over to RetroPie from within Rasplex is not as 'fancy' as the script I made for use in KODI (OpenELEC). It still does its job, and does it fine, but there is no message displayed or anything like that, its just a case of clicking on 'Games' and you boot straight into RetroPie, as shown in the video. Nothing wrong with that, just not as snazzy as I would have liked.

Please read the readme file for full instructions on how to install etc. but in case you are the type who doesn't read readme files then please do not change the skin in Rasplex!! If you change the skin from 'Aeon' which I have purposely set then you will lose the script to boot into RetroPie and be stuck in Rasplex for everrrrrrrr....

Anyway - I hope you find this useful. There are no other alternatives to Rasplex dual-booting as far as I can see, so this is probably your only option! Please let me know how you fair but bare in mind I know nothing about Rasplex so I won't be able to answer any general usage related questions.

Hi, i installed the dualboot image, however retropi is not starting.
Not when i choose games from RasPlex and not when i choose it from the dualboot menu.
The screen stays black, no feedback at all.. Waited 30 minutes, still no response.

Is there anyone who expierenced the same problem and fixed it?

First of all I'd like to say thanks, this is awesome ! I've been trying to do this myself for ages.
However, I would like to know how could I implement these functions into a different theme ? Maybe the normal Rasplex theme, because I realy hate this one (sorry).
Or would it be easier to do the opposite and boot into RetroPie first, then switch to Plex from there ?
It wouldn't matter about getting back to RetroPie from Rasplex, I'd just reboot the Rpi.

I like this A LOT!!!

I was looking at RetroPie+Kodi+Moonlight for streaming games but now leaning towards Plex instead of Kodi.

I saw your posts indicating that Aeon skin is compulsory and the default skin won't work. Pity but not end of world

Some questions if I may:

(1) How is the SD card partitioned? eg I have 64Gb. How much for Plex and how much for ES (latter needs space for Roms!)
(2) Is there an updated version with RetroPie 3.1 or a simple way to update both RPie and RPlex to latest?
(3) is control via a 360 or PS3 controller poss? It is within RetroPie but what about RPlex?
(4) if I want to add Moonlight presumably I can just tweak the RetroPie setup, likewise if I also wanted Kodi ??? (for some strange reason!!!)

You made an lovely distribution, the customization of RetroPie is just amazing !
Concerning RasPlex, I prefer the Aeon Nox 5 for Plex which has a better integration with the Raspberry than the Plex Aeon PHT.

So to use the Aeon Nox 5 Plex skin instead than the Plex Aeon PHT, here is the trick :

1. Boot on Rasplex Partition
2. Open ssh terminal on the Raspberry Pi
3. Type following commands :

4. Add following item to the include section :

7. From RaspPlex select the [Aeon Nox] skin.
8. Go to [SKIN SETTINGS] [Backgrounds] [Custom Home Background 1] and fill it with these values :

Image Path : /storage/pictures

9. Store Game fan art images you selected for your slideshow into /storage/pictures.

That being said 2 quick questions if I may:

1) WiFi - is there a way to set this up to work in both RasPlex and RetroPie?
I can't see a configuration for wireless in RasPlex, I did find one in RetroPie, but it appears to have issues with more secure networks and as soon as I leave RetroPie the configuration is lost.

2) Updating RetroPie - I was able to update RasPlex from the built in updater. I might be missing how to do it with RetroPie, but I don't think that there was an option. Hints/Suggestions?

1)I've never had a problem with retropie saving my wifi config so i'm not sure about that..
As for rasplex, you'll need to switch the theme to the original plex one. The wifi settings are in there. Then change back to the plex aeon theme. The original plex theme doesn't have a shortcut to get your back to retropie.

2) You can update retropie from raspi-config and retropie-setup as usual. In there i'd update the retropie script first, then retroarch, emulationstation, and your emulators. It should get you to latest wheezy release. Be careful. I made the mistake of not backing up my ES cfg settings so I lost the rasplex shortcut. Took me a while to figure out how to add it back in since i'm a noob at this.

This is exactly what I'm looking for, however I'm just getting the rainbow screen. Is this because I'm using a pi3? Do I need to change something to get this to work with a pi3?

I had the same problem. You are using an old version of the installer. Download the latest image.

You can update both RetroPie and Rasplex parts of this image from within each "OS".

I am now wondering IF it would be better of the RetroPie side of this image was built from DietPi+RetroPie rather than the default Raspbian+RetroPie.. it should be smaller and faster loading
