Console screens on Raspberry Pi

Thu Jun 18, 2015 9:15 am

Hello,

I would like to make a pocket Raspberry Pi with RetroPie that uses the case, the buttons and maybe parts of the PCB of a portable console. I would use a GameBoy, a GameBoy color, a GameBoy Advance or a PSP. My question was if it is possible to use the screen of one of this consoles on the RasPi.

There have been a few projects published that use old handheld consoles as cases. None of them use the original screen.

In order to use the screen you would need to have some information about how to interface with it. These details are likely to be unavailable unless someone has reverse engineered them.

Unless you are an electronics wiz, consider this too difficult for you to try.

There are many tutorials on the web who explain how to interact with a PSP screen, but you have also driver boards for this screen.
A video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cc5mcBREIg

So lets resume :
-it is possible to use the psp screen but modding it costs the same as buying a new screen
-it isn't possible to use directly the screen of an handheld on the RasPi
-in each case, the whole project costs 50-60 dolllars

Is this right ?
