Ragnarok Online server hosting capability

Wed Jun 17, 2015 8:40 am

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are big fans and former players of Ragnarok Online (an old MMO) and we were thinking about our own private server (for our personal use). I have some real servers available but they all make loud noise and arn't very electricity bill friendly so we thought about the latest Raspberry model to host our project knowing that he basics requirement are :
-1.5 GHz or faster CPU
-512 MB of RAM
-250MB of HDD
Do you think it could run fluently ? Have some of you ever tried that too ?

Thanks in advance for your answers, cordially

Which server software are you using ?
Do they have a Linux version ?
For Arm CPUs ?
If not, are you able to compile it yourself ?

Ah, RO.... good times. =)

I don't think there's a "yes, it will work" or "no, it won't work" sort of answer here. It will be somewhere in between. I expect it to be a bit too resource heavy, but you should really give it a go yourself. (Assuming there's an open source server you can compile for ARM).

Well there is eAthena and rAthena on github.
https://github.com/eathena/eathena
https://github.com/rathena/rathena

Perhaps someone can give it a try? I can't install mysql on my current build, so I can't compile them myself.

I though about installing the server on a Debian using, like C-Fu said, eAthena or rAthena repo on github which should theoricaly run even on ARM (Heracles should also work but I'm a bit less sure about it). I was also concerned about the perfs, but for a small amount of player (basically my girlfriend and I) it should work. I think I'll order a RPI 2 in the next months and give it a try, then I'll be able to tell if it's working properly or not (so I don't lock this topic for now).

Hello,
I'm sorry about reviving a long dead thread. But, I'm so excited about it!
I've done it (a Ragnarok online private server running on a Raspberry Pi 3).

Here is the link to the guide:

I'm running it on my Raspberry Pi 3 home server.

Server starts just fine, using arm architecture.

It's been more than 60 days, my Raspberry Pi server runs 24/7
Without any problems.

Wrote a troubleshooting ANNEX to my guide.

https://habilisbest.com/troubleshooting ... ine-server

This annex addresses frequently asked questions such as

- How to make my Account GM (Game Master)?
- How to enable more @commands for players?
- How to make it so that my friends could connect to my server over the internet?

Enjoy the game!

Have a nice gameplay!

Honestly this is really cool. I used to play on Private Ragnarok Online Servers, so hosting one with a Raspberry PI seems like a cool thing to do.

I still play ragnarok onlinehttps://ragnarokonline.co But its really cool to see that rasberrypi can actually be used for hosting a server. Did you notice any lag or any limitations at all while running it? Or was it pretty smooth?
