keilmillerjr's Pi Retro Gaming Project

Fri Feb 20, 2015 8:48 pm

With the release of the Raspberry Pi 2, I thought it might be time to venture into the pi world and make a retro gaming console. The goal is to have this be similar to an actual console where I can take it to a party and not worry about it. This means that the sd card must be as corruption proof as possible, and it must be enclosed where the unit and brittle ports are protected.

Here's my component list. These are items I either already had, received, or am awaiting to receive.
The UPS Pico would prevent SD card corruption from some one unplugging the system without shutting it down. The shutdown circuit would allow a person to start and shutdown the console by pressing a single button mounted on the front of the enclosure. When the unit is on, the button would light up with power from one of the GPIO pins. Rear would include a full size USB port for power and HDMI port. The front will feature the power button and two usb ports.

I plan on using my PS3 controller (s) via bluetooth. With a 2000ma power supply, I am hoping the raspberry pi 2 can supply enough power to the front 2 usb ports to charge the controllers. Finding another power supply or dock to charge them is a pet peeve of mine.

The case/enclosure I am looking at is the Polycase DC-96P. I made a cardboard test box to the dimensions. It's large and I can definitely squeeze everything into one of their smaller cases of similar style. I'll test fit everything once the shutdown circuit and ups pico arrive from the mail.

Do you guys think the wifi and bluetooth modules I got will be powerful enough to still work well inside the case? I am worried that I went too cheap.
