Re: Steam and Halflife for raspberry pi 2
The RPi 2 B uses a ARMv7 CPU therefore more compatable with other Mobile Devices in terms of architecture..ripednail wrote:Wouldn't it be cool to have linux support for steam games that were ported to linux. IE halflife 1, 2 & counterstrike, TF2.
Asking for community support to goto mobile website and let them know that the linux version of steam isn't working with the ARM v6 processor and that they need to recompile to support.
Head over to the steam forums under thier mobile section and let them know if you agree.

The source engine, the engine which Valve have used for most of their games (Some older games have been imported into source), supports android. Particularly, Portal and Half Life 2 have been ported over to run on the Nvidia android device line up. The CPU that Nvidia use is based upon the ARMv7 Architecture, the same as that of the Pi.
Now, here's the catch, Valve have to compile a version of <Game> in order for us to play it. As we don't have the source code we can't do that ourself. Sure, you could install android and all hat, but even then, Portal and Half Life 2 are built to run with Nvidia's GPU.

Actually, it may be possible with the pi 3 model b with 1gb of ram. I am currently experimenting and i dont know if it works yet.
Here's how it works, you recode the config.txt to have the highest amount of vram possible. Then in your pi you use a 8gb or higher flash drive as swap ram. Then you install wine and install steam for windows. if that does not work then install exagear or qemu and try again. i'd recommend using a cooling fan with your pi.
I will give further info if my attempt works

If you search around here, there should be some posts about playing a version of Half Life (not 2) on the Pi2B. IIRC, I was playing an Android version on the Pi2B (Raspbian). It required some effort, but I do recall that I finished playing the entire game on the Pi2B.

For HalfLife 1, you have a long thread about having it running on the RPi already.

Ther IS an android port of Counter Strike v1.6 with servers and everything... It's a start, at least.

(I would really like a slice of pi right now)
