Right, that was a good days work. Menu systems set up to provide specific controls to specific ships.... quite pleased with this though there's a couple of minor bugs to find and fix when deleting buttons.
this is all WIP and subject to change though but still starting to look nice,

Once I get a tactical view in place I will be able to get them moving to positions in the scene, so that the settings they are given make some sense.

Menu action sounds ;)

How did you make the video?
HDMI recorder or by Pi?

Had sound on for a while, (see earlier vids on my patreon) but need some better click effects.... will get on that.

I have an avermedia external capture unit, cant remember the model, nice bit of usb kit. I send all video out to it before it hits my screen, and it grabs it at 30fps and sends it to the PC.. I might try to invest in a 60fps version if I get a few more patrons. I find that to be simpler than any PC or Pi based systems, I just press a button and its grabbing.

Im still working on flight/movement characteristics, but since I'm going to let the player fly some of the ships, I have added some cockpits to the project...

These are 1st pass unlit meshes though I'll add some bump/emission/specularity to them later, not sure about animating the screens though its a costly process on the GPU

No massively new updates to report, been busy refactoring a few things and getting more content converted from OpenGLES2.0 to 3 where it seemed appropriate.

One thing I am pleased with is adding the ability to load and play OGG files instead of Wavs... It save a lot of space on the SD and loading time is cut down dramatically.

still plugging away though expect a nice update with a play through soon

visually I've not got a lot to show at the moment as I'm working on some selection and zooming systems which is taking a while but is progressing steadilu.

But I needed a break so did some voice over stuff, using a very cool text to speech package called Speechelo

Did about 150 voice samples for differnt things in game, using a range of accents and genders, aside from the usal confirmed, roger, and aye aye captain I invented a nice Welsh tactical computer...I'm calling him Dylan.

Not a lot of progress to report at the moment, been very heavily refactoring some code, transitioning from a quad tree to grid based data structure and doing a lot of test renders on different styles of instance rendering to see what my limits were. This was the reason for a change in data structure, I was finding the quad trees too restrictive and time consuiming when I was arranging the draw batch... It's never easy undoing work you are happy with, but it needed to change.

Progress continues, hoping to get a cool walk through video ready soon.

Starting to pick up speed again.. literally, after attempting to do some bloom effects in game I just realised I wasn't going to get the fps I needed, so resorted to some shader noise tricks to see if I can come close, it might be too subtle but I can play later.

Also started to add the homeworld selection system, its still very WIP but its starting to pull the threads to gether so we can start playing from the menu and see where it goes.

Re: Seeking interest and support in a game designed for Rpi

Been little quieter in the last month, a few holidays and some bugs to fix as well as some refactoring so progress slowed down a bit.

I also had some major issues with my camera system which was giving me a lot of grief, it was based on Euler systems and had known limitations I was trying to work around, but even the work arounds started to fail, in the end some legacy code I was using for orientation was not compatible with Bullet physics (and my render orientation) causing all kinds of odd issues with cameras. But a bit of a reworking and using a bullet physics controlled drone platform to move the camera around, finally cured everything for me and now my cameras can fly around as attachements to ships or as static views, allowing me to do some proper panning for the 1st time.. (I was limited to rough moves and arcing slightly off centre.)

This finally lets me get on with some of the last bits of the maps and tactical/strategic views that form the core gameplay, and then I can have a bit of fun moving ships around and blowing things up....next month.

Not sure how interesting you'll find work in progress videos, but I like them, I'm very busy working on flight control and formation flying for ships in game, so they can fly from point to point and also engage in attack/defense and just flyby's.

For individial ships thats not a big deal, but for a group, you need to keep them in formation and also make sure they don't fly or bump into other ships due to course changes... Its a fairly big deal and taking up quite a bit of time so far.. and I think a bit more time needed, but progress is coming.

I've had a few temp systems in place so far to set up the core ideas, and to do proximity checks none of which gave me a result I was happy with so I opted to use bullet physics ghost objects to create proximity spheres to return collision info.. On the surface this seemed easy,...but ..it needed some work.

I now have it in place and ready to do the next set of evasive move systems.. more small steps :D

Your small steps would be giant leaps for me.

For formation flying is there any flocking code in the physic lib?
Those old flocking triangle(birds) screensavers was the first time I saw that behaviour for real.
Similar code for fish schooling.
That WebGL code was my Pi stress tester for a few years until they got decent fps and driver updates.

I tried some flocking systems, but they fall apart when you want to control a specific ship, and also to fly in tight formations, also they do allow a lot of bumping, which, might not get noticed but I'd be a bit miffed by it.

I will see if there are other flocking systems that can help though, but this does give me a more "realistic" planned reaction based avoidance ratherthan instant move... which is more what a piloted craft will do. I need a few more days/weeks to finish up this part but when done it should be quite a convincing system....he said...hopefully :D
