Itchy problem :)

Fri Sep 15, 2017 6:28 pm

I got the old raspberry pi out, model B v1.2, and downloaded the new software onto the sdcard and installed. Raspberry pi working fine on new software, except Scratch 2. It will not load at all from the icon, the only response through the terminal is "Illegal instruction". Do any of you know of a way to get Scratch 2 to work on my raspberry pi.

Thank you.

Does "the new software" mean 2017-09-07-raspbian-stretch?

Have you brought it fully up to date with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I think I recall seeing a new version of Scratch as part of the upgrade: maybe that will deal with your issue?

Failing that: does Scratch2 actually run on old/original RPi hardware or does it need one of the later CPU chips?

I believe the Scratch 2 for the Pi needs a Pi 2 or above.

Yes quite so as Scratch2 uses Flash Player which has never been ported to the ARMv6 Architecture, but both the Blog and the Worksheet page fail to mention this fact.

Yep, I'm an idiot. It needs at least a Pi 2, so looks like I will be buying a new Pi :D

Thanks for the responses.

Or run the Scratch 1.4 that is still installed. It's almost certainly faster, doesn't use the abomination-known-as-Flash and still works nicely whether online or offline.
