camera is not working on Raspberry Pi with Android image

Tue May 13, 2014 12:54 pm

Hi,

Last week i purchased Raspberry Pi board, and i build Android Gingerbread image and Linux kernel 3.1.9 image locally. Made partition on SD card and flashed. Finally Android image got boot up and i can see the UI on screen, and i have connected Raspberry camera board to verify camera preview. In Android GUI i just clicked "camera" but camera is not working. If anybody know why it is not working please let me know.

Android is unsupported on Raspi, and no-one has ever written the code to make the camera run under Android. It's not a simple task.

I'm surprised anything works under Android on a Pi.

Have you built a working and usable android image? If so then you have succeeded where many others have failed.

Thanks all for reply.

Camera is working on Linux 3.10 version in Raspberry Pi board(only Linux image). Using "raspistill/raspivid" command i can able to perform this operation, in build this command is invoking MMAL application function and internally OpenMAX and Videocore driver functions are calling to perform preview and video operations. Hope my understanding is clear.

Now my question here is, Is it possible to call the same functions(MMAL using Raspicam) in Android. Or is there any block between application and camera hardware layer. Please let me know the possibility.

Thanks in advance.

Well , if YOU know how to incorporate it into Android , go for it.
As Android is open source , "everything is possible".

To be honest : Most people HERE don't care about Android ,
and those who do are facing a severe lack of manpower ,
experience or financial support. There is huge difference
between baking a custom ROM and actually porting Android
to a new platform , incorporating all hardware-acceleration
into the Android infrastructure - you don't have an OEM which
has done that work for you already on the Pi.

Android uses something called libcamera - the VC4 version of libcamera internally at Brcm (sorry, cannot release it AFAIK) uses MMAL. So yes, this is entirely possible. Just implement libcamera over MMAL.

Hi All,

Now camera functionalities(camera preview, image capture and video recording) are working for Android on Raspberry Pi platform.

no proof (even a month later) = it didn't happen!
