Android and Videocore IV

Sat Feb 09, 2013 3:54 pm

Simple, but dumb question.

Android is running on PI without hardware acceleration, but some phones with the same GPU (e.g. my own Samsung GT-5512) run fine with the same chip.

Is there any way to use the drivers on the phone to the PI's advantage?

Broadcom are apparently working hard on drivers for the Pi perhaps the Samsung's BCM21553 is different to the Pi's BM2835 only James could answer that one.
There was a video demo posted on the Pi page many many months ago I wish they never bothered now, a lot of people like myself had high hopes for Android but now not even sure it would surface.

It's indeed the BCM21553, not sure how huge the difference from the Pi's SoC is but same OS and same graphics chip ought to be a good sign.

As for the Broadcom team developing drivers, is it for demonstration purposes or for releasing to the PI community? That would be great indeed.

Broadcom BCM2763 VideoCore IV LPDDR2 128MB (neocore: 45.5fps, Nenamark1: 24.8fps), 1 gigapixel fill rate, 40nm

That's the mobile's GPU info, btw.
