OGLES 3.0 & OGL 4.3 Standards Released At SIGGRAPH 2012

Wed Aug 08, 2012 10:24 am

For anyone interested, the OGLES 3.0 & OGL 4.3 standards were released at SIGGRAPH 2012:

Eben, Dom, et al, will it be possible to update the blob and libs on the Pi eventually to support ES 3.0? Looks like it's mostly about extending texture compression formats in OGL to OGLES, improving cross-platform compatibility, performance, and resource utilization (e.g., compressed textures in RAM expanded within the GPU, as I read it).

Depends on Broadcom - not something that Eben or Dom can just knock up. If customers (and I mean big customers to cover cost of implementation) want it then Broadcom will do it. If it gets done for the Videocore 4, then there is no technical reason the Raspi won't have them.

Note the key word "eventually" - I was asking about feasibility at some indefinite point in the future, not for them to do it on their dime just for the Pi. I was asking Eben and Dom as they will probably already have an idea what customers may want, and when. Non-answers from elsewhere are neither desired nor required. As my chemistry prof liked to say, "If you're not part of the solution, your're just part of the precipitate."

I'd be a little more polite IIWY, since I actually work at Broadcom, and therefore there is a vague change I might know what I'm talking about. And I did indeed answer your question - "If it gets done for the Videocore 4, then there is no technical reason the Raspi won't have them.". The answer to IF for the Videocore is still up in the air, but I will try and find out more. Whether I then post what I find out is debatable, might keep it to myself. Just for fun.

And the phrase "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem" is complete and utter nonsense, invented by morons (since it so blatantly untrue), as by sheer coincidence we were discussing over the partition only yesterday. Although we did phrase it slightly differently.

Aside from the obvious resource/motivation considerations, the appearance of ES3 on the RPi will also depend on the silicon's capabilities. After all, the current VCiV stack still lacks some optional-yet-common low-level ES2 features, e.g. the partial derivative GLSL functions.

jamesh, would it be possible for you to shed some light on the above matter - plans/no plans?

I'll try and find out - amazing how asking nicely seems to get more things answered.

Have found out, and unfortunately am not allowed to divulge the information for various reasons. To that end I'm going to close the thread, as there is little point is discussing, or asking any further questions on the subject. Sorry 'bout that.
