[Fixed] init-system-helpers package missing ?

Sat Nov 15, 2014 7:02 am

Hi everybody,

Since some days (three or four), I have the following message after a “apt-get update” and “apt-get dist-upgrade”:
The following packages have been kept back:
fake-hwclock
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
When I try to force install “fake-hwclock”, I get the following error message:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
fake-hwclock : Depends: init-system-helpers (>= 1.18~) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
And “init-system-helpers” seems to be missing:
# apt-cache search init-system-helpers
#
My “/etc/apt/sources.list” contains the following line:
deb http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian wheezy main contrib non-free rpi
Do you know where I may be wrong ?

Thanks.

Have you got any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ that refer to Jessie instead of Wheezy?

The fake-hwclock in wheezy has no dependencies at all, especially not on init-system-helpers which doesn't even exist in wheezy.

However the fake-hwclock in wheezy now has a dependency on this init-system-helpers.

What does "apt-cache policy fake-hwclock" say?

No, all files refer to Wheezy
root@raspberrypi /etc/apt/sources.list.d # cat *.list
deb http://raspberrypi.collabora.com wheezy rpi
deb http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ wheezy main untested

Thanks for the tip
root@raspberrypi /etc/apt/sources.list.d # apt-cache policy fake-hwclock
fake-hwclock:
Installed: 0.5
Candidate: 0.8
Version table:
0.8 0
500 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ wheezy/untested armhf Packages
*** 0.5 0
500 http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/ wheezy/main armhf Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I've just removed “untested” from raspberrypi.org repo definition, and the error message is now gone.

Thanks :)

The problem hasn't been fixed. I've just installed a fresh raspbian-ua-netinst v1.0.7 and I'm getting:
root@pi:~# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
fake-hwclock libgcc1 libstdc++6
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
It's based on Wheezy, no unstable at all.

The OP's issue WAS fixed. Unless you provide all the information the other guy provided, we don't know what the issue that you're seeing is.

I'll remove fake-hwclock from 'untested', but people shouldn't have that component enabled without a good reason anyway.

Why is that? (just asking)

As the name implies, it's stuff which hasn't been tested. Sometimes it's easier to ask someone to enable the untested component than to send them an archive of .deb files.
