How to upgrade to the latest Raspbian.org kernel ?

Wed May 14, 2014 8:36 pm

Gents (Plugwash)
I have been using the Raspbian kernel for a while , as i need the linux-headers for building modules.
See:
http://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/us ... b-adapter/

But i miss a "sticky" how to upgrade to the latest Raspbian kernel.

I did this step as per plugwash advice to install the kernel , some time ago.
sudo apt-get install linux-image-rpi-rpfv

Now i just got some nice USB Wifi dongles : http://www.ebay.com/itm/400593915437 (rtl8188eu based)
And they weren't rekognized by my RasPi.

I found out they needed this module:
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu.git

And i decided to upgrade my RasPi to the latest kernel , when i saw some talk about a 3.12 kernel
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 66&t=65209

I did the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

But it only got me : 3.10.3

Is that the correct way to upgrade to the latest (stable Raspbian kernel ?)

In order to boot the new kernel i edited the /boot/config.txt

In boot/config.txt append this at end of file , or it will boot the default "Foundation kernel"

************* SNIP ***********************
# Set params for "raspbian debian-style kernel" boot
#kernel=vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-rpi
#initramfs initrd.img-3.2.0-4-rpi followkernel
#kernel=vmlinuz-3.6-trunk-rpi
#initramfs initrd.img-3.6-trunk-rpi followkernel
kernel=vmlinuz-3.10-3-rpi
initramfs initrd.img-3.10-3-rpi followkernel
************* SNIP ***********************

Then i did a : rpi-update (to get the newest firmware)
The rpi-update also pulls the newest "Foundation kernel" , but i don't use it.

And did a reboot.

I now get :
raspi3:~$ uname -a
Linux raspi3 3.10-3-rpi #1 Debian 3.10.11-1+rpi6 (2014-04-27) armv6l GNU/Linux

And the WiFi module build and installed perfect ;)

But is there suggestions/improvement in my "kernel update steps"

TIA
/Bingo

Ps: If you need heatsinks for your RasPi's , have a look here http://www.ebay.de/itm/121288920289
They work excellent , and i have coolers fro my 4 PI's , and the next 6.

Are you sure ?

I was under the impresion that it would get me the newest foundation kernel , not the newest Raspbian kernel.
And my steps above seems to indicate the same.

I can't use the foundation kernel , as you can't do a: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

That's why i switched to the real Raspbian kernel , and haven't regretted it for a second.

Hi,

If you do an rpi-update then use rpi-source - https://github.com/notro/rpi-source/ you'll get the correct headers. The rpi-source wiki has examples of building modules so should help.

I just did the rpi-update to get the newest firmware , not the foundation kernel.

I want to use the raspbian kernel , as it has decent headerfiles etc.

plugwash where are you ?

Edit: Changed the title to raspbian.org kernel , instead of just raspbian kernel.
That might have been the thing leading to the ansvers above.

Eh?

rpi-update gets the Foundation's official kernel (plus some userspace programs) that's at the leading edge of support. The version on the Raspbian repo will always be some way back level from that.

What DougieLawson said. The foundation kernel recieves
many updates per month , and Raspbian carries older kernels
for stability.

rpi-update will upgrade the firmware AND kernel unless you use the SKIP_KERNEL option.

Well

Seems like i have gotten my ansver , allthough somewhat clouded.

1:
The raspbian.org kernel is aparrently always behind the foundation kernel.
That is ok by me , i need a stable kernel that behaves like my other debian/ubuntu's.
I mean ... where i can get headers installed via apt-get , like most normal kernels.

Some people might want to use the latest & greatest git pull version , i don't.
I prefer predictable behaviour , as in apt-get install .....

2:
I just did the rpi-update to get the firmware updated.
I did notice that it also pulled a newer foundation kernel.
But as i have this in /boot/config.txt
# Set params for "raspbian debian-style kernel" boot
kernel=vmlinuz-3.10-3-rpi
initramfs initrd.img-3.10-3-rpi followkernel

My RasPi really does't care about the new foundation kernel.

A thankyou goes to both teams , foundation and raspbian.org.

But it would still be nice with a "sticky" that told what version the newest raspbian.org kernel is.
For now i'll just use : $apt-cache search linux-image

Normally for raspbian wheezy I only put a new major version of the kernel in when the foundation make it their reccomended kernel version. I was not aware that they had done that for 3.12

There is a 3.13 kernel in raspbian jessie but it may (or may not) have dependency issues if you try to install it in raspbian wheezy.

@plugwash

I'm perfectly satisfied with whatever kernel you deem as "stable" for the raspbian.org repos.
I don't need bleeding edge , i need a stable system ;)

Thank you for the ansver , and the raspbian.org team's work.
