Compile times

Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:43 am

I was wondering how long it takes to cross compile the raspbien kernel on a fast processor? It took me over 12 hours on the Pi. Not something I do that often and it can just go overnight but I just wanted to see the comparison.

Can't help with a fast processor.

My HP 550 lap-top takes about 2 hours (I've never timed it, that is a feeling).

I have an Atom D525 1.80GHz 64bit dual core with 4GB of RAM and it takes it about ~80 minutes with -j3 to compile using the /proc/config.gz that ships with the official foundation Raspbian image...

About half an hour on a Dell Latitude E6400 with an Intel Core2 Duo [email protected] 4GB RAM. Ubuntu 12.04

A little more than two hours on a virtual Ubuntu 12.04, running in VirtualBox on a Win7 Ultimate 64-bit host with an Intel Core2 Duo [email protected]
The virtual machine has one CPU and 512MB RAM allocated to it.

I have played around a bit with distributed compiling using distcc.
With four Raspberries a kernel build took about four hours.
