mono - adds another set of languages that can be used with Pi (VB, C#, F#) - F# being particularly interesting for education (though probably older kids).

1) Mono (lots of languages and common windowing environment)

2) Node js (tried to compile it but it failed - will post errors)

Mono is in, unfortunately it's not working right and the issue seems to affect debian armhf as well.
2) Node js (tried to compile it but it failed - will post errors)
Pretty sure this is already in the repository.

I really need for an up to date node.js with its built in npm package manager and a working node serialport.
If not as an actual debian package a means of building it all from sources.

I didn't check to see if this was said already but my 10 year old son was just introduced to StopMotion on Ubuntu and he loves it. He had previously been using an Android app on his LG phone to create short animation films. So if StopMotion could be added to the standard Raspian distro, I think lots of children would benefit by learning to make their own stop-motion films. Of course, there are other programs out there, but StopMotion seems to be one of the easiest for a child to learn.

I'm closing this thread, it's become long and unfocused enough that it's difficult to manage.
