xsnow on Raspbian

Sat Dec 14, 2013 10:55 pm

Hi,
I was wanting to install xsnow (http://dropmix.xs4all.nl/rick/Xsnow/) on my Raspberry Pi, but when I followed the tutorial (http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-unix-xsnow.html), it said xsnow not found.

Could someone explain to me why this is happening, and how I can install it on my pi?

Thanks

Starting on a brand new install of Raspbian from NOOBS 1_3_2

sudo apt-get install libxt-dev libxpm-dev libxext-dev xutils-dev build-essential
cd /tmp
wget http://dropmix.xs4all.nl/rick/Xsnow/xsnow-1.42.tar.gz
tar -xzvf xsnow-1.42.tar.gz
cd xsnow-1.42
xmkmf
make
sudo make install

Hi,
Many thanks for your help. I followed your instructions, and everything installed fine. However, when I try and run xsnow, no snow appears. I am running it in a LXTerminal with the GUI.

Do you know what is wrong?

Thanks

Move the mouse click away from the window running xsnow. Press Ctrl+C.

Hi again,
I did what you said, and it worked, but only for about 2-3 seconds. After that, it quit.

I have made a video showing the issue:

Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks

I'd guess the way to fix it is to re-write the code so that it doesn't react to stray keyboard or mouse movements and runs longer before it dies.

If you change line 209 (in xsnow.c) to

Code: Select all

#define debug 1
and recompile then it will spew out lots of diagnostic messages (which might help find why it fails).

Hi,
After a bit of experimenting, I found that if you hit CTRL-C on the desktop, without xsnow running, then all the icons dissapear, the after the same amount of time that xsnow runs for, reappear again.

Could the issue be that xsnow only runs while the icons have gone, and is there a way to make them disappear for longer?

Thanks for your help.

It does not fail. It draws perfectly happily into the root window. You just cannot see the root window most of the time because your GUI overlays its own pointless window.

To fix it "killall pcmanfm", and avoid restarting the GUI file manager.

Just a note to say that the instructions provided work under Raspbian Jessie.

Thanks!

Ok, it took some time, but there is now a fully functional xsnow for raspbian (stretch).
I guess it will run in older raspbian's also.
