Re: Tutorial: Compile VLC with HW acceleration - Jessie, RPi

Wed May 04, 2016 1:19 am

Greetings - new to Raspberry Pi and trying to get vlc working with hardware acceleration to play VOB files (I have about 1200 DVD's ripped on a 16TB Raid5 QNAP.

I followed the updated instructions at the beginning of this post and everything ran to completion. I made sure the audio and video output are set correctly. When I play an mp4 video file, I get the audio output but no video. I just get the orange cone flickering but that is it.

As per one of the entries, I opened up a terminal session and went to the vlc directory and ran ./vlc. I then opened the video file from the menu entry and got the same result. When I cancelled the playback, these are the messages in the terminal session appearing over and over again:

[6f0f798] core filter error: Failed to create video filter2
[6f8007c8] core filter error: Failed to create video filter2

Any ideas as to what the problem might be would be appreciated! I'll keep searching the Forums for an answer. Thanks for any assistance!!

Are you sure, that you used the right video setting (OpenMax IL)?
Do you have set GPU memory to at least 128 MB?
Check, that the mp4 file uses either H264 or H263 codec. Try playing it with omxplayer first, to check if the codec is supported.
For VOB files you will need the MPEG-2 licence key.

I will double check everything when I get back home tonight.

Curious, if I play VOB files that I ripped with DVDShrink using VLC on Windows or OS X without any issues, why is there a need to license a codec on linux? Maybe I missed something in one of the other Forum entries.

Thanks for your help and I'll post an update tonight.

MPEG codecs require a licence fee, software and hardware, but they only enforce them on hardware codecs, because in some countries (France, for example) the law or patent rights are different (VLC comes from France).

I double checked the Video Output and it was set to OpenMax IL

I set the GPU memory to 128 - gpu_mem_1024=128

I checked the file once it was loaded into VLC and it reported that the codec was H264. Trying to play the video with vlc resulted in the same stream of error messages. I got audio, but no video - just the cone logo flashing like a refresh rate. It was only the cone that was flashing not the rest of the display screen outside of the vlc window.

I then opened the video with omxplayer and it played correctly - both audio and video. Here is what omxplayer reported after I stopped the playback:

omxplayer -o hdmi /home/pi/Videos/test.mp4
Video codec omx-h264 width 1280 height 720 profile 100 fps 30.000000
Audio codec aac channels 2 samplerate 44100 bitspersample 16
Subtitle count: 0, state: off, index: 1, delay: 0
V:PortSettingsChanged: [email protected] interlace:0 deinterlace:0 anaglyph:0 par:1.00 display:0 layer:0 alpha:255 aspectMode:0
Stopped at: 00:00:10
have a nice day ;)

Any other ideas??

Reset preferences to default values. Then set video and audio again.
If that doesn't help, you have to check your build. Run the configure command again and compare the output to the following:

It can be built with the same instructions as in the OP. I'll edit it now.
MMAL must stay disabled because it crashes everything. OpenMax IL is the only working HW acceleration. SD video and some 720p video can also be played with SDL output (RPi3), using software codecs.

Hello there,

This compile is truly awesome! All is working well except for one thing.
Whenever is start a video which does not use the full screen, I can still see the desktop in background.
Now, with OMXPlayer you could solve this with "-b". Is there a way for the HW accelerated VLC to do the same?

Thanks and best,

Knoose

Hello gkreidl,

Thank you for your reply. Although it is not the news I was hoping for. So I just have to wait until this will be fixed.
In the meantime have a small workaround for anyone interested :) :
I turned off "use same wallpaper on all desktops" and created a second desktop with a black image as background.
Afterwards I set the taskbar settings to dissappear when unused effectively giving me a black background.
So whenever I want to watch a movie I use the second desktop and it works fine. You can even call on the VLC GUI and its controls.

Best,

Knoose

Video codec omx-h264 width 1280 height 720 profile 100 fps 30.000000

have a nice day ;)

Any other ideas??
i had quite the same problem, only .avi files seemed to work. i figured out the problem though. it appeared that i had 2 versions of VLC installed, and the default executable was the one that couldn't manage any other format than *.avi; after starting up vlc-2.2.2/cvlc it all works fine, including network streams, and remote control (via VLC remote on android)

maybe this helps you ;)

Hi guys,

Did anyone manage to use livestreamer with VLC and the new OpenGL beta drivers ?

When I try to launch a stream I get a black screen (not only in VLC but the whole screen). Screen comes back when I alt+F4 VLC.

I really hope one day this driver will work fine, because OpenMAX video output... you know... meh.

The OpenGL driver does not include video decoding. OpenMax or MMAL are still required. At the moment the OpenGL driver keeps them from working, so HW video decoding doesn't work at all.

Ok, thanks for the reply, I didn't know that.

Is it planned to add this feature for the OpenGL driver in the future ?

No, It's not part of the OpenGL specification.

i have tried it with the latest vlc 3.0.0 git code and it is compiled without issues. on the other hand, it starts throwing errors messages everywhere:

Code: Select all

core stream error: unknown query in demux_vaControlDefault
it might be related to the VLC code since it is not stable.

Before I compiled the 2.2.2 and later the 2.2.3 version I also tried the 3.0 versions: no chance, all the RPi related things (both omx and MMAL support) were terribly broken.

Actually you can, just below where you specify openmax IL in video options (Force Aspect Ratio) you can specify the scale just set it to "16:9" and the image will always be scaled so it fits the entire screen.

Keep getting this error in vlc (after updating the system yesterday).

"double free or corruption (out)"

It only occurs when pressing stop, next or prev buttons - either on the remote or in the app itself.

I did a full recompile - didn`t help

Any suggestions ?

Did you receive an update of any VLC package? This shouldn't happen, but maybe you did not un-install a VLC version from the repository before installing the compiled version.

I did
make uninstall.
deleted the old src folder

compiled everything again from scratch

and did a "make install" with the new compilation.
also did a "apt-get remove vlc" before compilation.

It`s strange that even if i do "sudo apt-get install vlc" and run vlc bash says "command not found" :)

How do i check if there are wrong vlc packages?

VLC consists of more than one package. Install synaptic, start it with "gksudo synaptic" and search for "vlc". This will show you, if you still have any VLC packages installed.
