That gives a hint. Try reconfiguring and compiling with these options:

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-rpi-omxil --disable-ogg --disable-mux_ogg  --enable-realrtsp
realrtsp is disabled by default.

Thanks very much. Seems like we are getting close to getting this working. I'm getting an error when I run that config command though:

configure: error: invalid feature name: mux_ogg

I don't think I received this error previously.

Maybe you have a newer version. In my config file it's included.

Try without that option, but maybe you'll get a compiler error later on. This error was the reason why I excluded the ogg support (partially).

I have tried to follow your tutorial, but I can't seem to get it to do anything.

When I run the following command

vlc --vout moxil_vout big_buck_bunny_480p_h264.mov

I just get

core error: video output creation failed
core error: failed to create video output

If I try a network camera feed I get an error

core decoder error: corrupt module: /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/codec/libavcodec_plugin.so

the library is there. I should point out that I'm trying to run this without X. I need to be able to run this from the command line and omxplayer does not work with the network camera I'm trying to use.

I followed two different tutorials from scratch now with the same result. Is there something in the latest Raspbian firmware that's screwing this up? Does anyone have any ideas of what's going wrong. The log file doesn't seem to be giving much away.

My version, which I compiled 7 months ago is still working and I have always the latest firmware and linux kernel (through rpi-update). So, no: it's not a question of RPi firmware or OS.

Perhaps you should try one of the interface versions first. nvlc runs without X. vlc itself, without setting the interface in the command line, tries to run the QT version.

Ah, thanks for the tip, that's what I'm missing. Running the same command, but with nvlc

nvlc --vout moxil_vout big_buck_bunny_480p_h264.mov

I now get a nice ncurses screen showing me that the video is playing, including a progress bar, but alas no video output. Is it behind the ncurses screen? Do I have to specify the render layer? I've checked all the other virtual terminals just in case, but nothing there. Maybe it doesn't work without X?

I've just tried

--no-xlib --fullscreen --video-on-top

options, but they haven't worked. Has anyone got VLC to play on a terminal only?

I can play any kind of media with nvlc directly from the command line.

You should boot into the full X QT version once and modify the settings as described in my OP. They will be saved and also used with nvlc.

OK so I'm guessing something else has gone wrong. In X it doesn't even play big_buck_bunny, after changing the settings to OpenMax. So I think I'm going to start again and go through the steps more carefully.

So I started again from scratch and followed the tutorial exactly (cut and paste all commands). Only thing I did to begin with was

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

out of habit more than anything. I then made the settings changes you mention and downloaded this file

In X, this crashes VLC, in the terminal using nvlc it does the same as before, ncurses screen comes up but nothing else. The stream from the camera also fails to load with the same error as before

Any ideas? I would literally put money in to see this made into a package for Raspbian! Maybe the source code from the VLC git is no longer working?

The only difference I can see is that I compiled my version in November, so it was not the current one. And I was not the only one getting it to work.

No, only hint I have is that I compiled it around Nov., 1st.

The MAKE file is created by boootstrap/configure. Did you get any errors when running those scripts?

configure returns an error, because the current VLC version requires newer versions of libavcodec and libavutil.

The version I compiled was from (about) 20th October; the versions of libavcodec and libavutil required match the versions we have in Raspbian. You either have to compile newer versions or get an older version of vlc from vlc github.

I just installed vlc using sudo apt-get install vlc. Is that not using the HW acceleration or would it be possible to modify it in order to have it running? I can see a pretty much more than 50% cpu usage when I play an mp3 file while running X.

No hardware acceleration. But installing it first and then installing a newer version on top is the recommended way.

Why can't they put the good one into the repository?

This thread has been going on for a long time - they should have gotten it working by now.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

This is the Debian stable release policy; you should know this by now. If you want newer versions, upgrade to Jessie.
