Minimal distro for headless web server

Sun Sep 22, 2013 6:43 pm

I would like to know if there is a general procedure to follow for removing all of the extra stuff not needed for a headless web server, e.g. without all the xorg and gui items, no python, etc.

Just a suggestion, but Arch is a Command Line Distro by default and includes the Networking Support.

Regards minimalizing Raspbian Wheezy, there are several postings on the forum regarding the procedure, and I believe that you may find a ready made IMG :P

I have a script that strips a lot from Raspbian. Also have a pre-stripped image available.
There's also a installation script built by hifi that will start with a very bare install of Raspbian.
I believe it was plugwash that built a minimal image also.

Thanks folks for the quick replies. I appreciate access to the stripped down packages, but I would prefer instructions on how to remove which items that I deem unneeded rather than a ready made image, based on Raspian please.

Well if you want to remove ones that you deem uneeded, then the only way is to go through the output of dpkg -l and remove what you think is uneeded.
