Bittorrent Sync on RPi

Wed Apr 24, 2013 9:12 pm

There seems to be some stuff floating around that this is working under Raspbian?

Any truth in the rumours?

I had a quick look on the bittorrent sync forums yesterday on this - there did appear to be some people who had it working on raspbian.

I am contemplating a photo storage system comprising two (initially) pi's:

Pi 1 - Owncloud server and Bittorrent Sync. Photos from my smartphone and tablet would be synced to the pi, using the owncloud server.

Pi 2 - Bittorrent Sync. Photos from Pi 1 are backed up to this Pi. Pi 2 would be stored at a friend's house.

More Pi's could easily be added.

Taking it a step further, each Pi could have an owncloud server, and a partitioned HDD. So, Pi 1 (mine) receives my photos and backs them up to Pi 2 (friends). He sets his phone to sync to his Pi (Pi 2), and these are backed up to my Pi 1. Sort of like a mutual backup system.

I would want to restrict it so that my friend can't see my files, which I haven't looked into yet.

I need also to check how owncloud stores photos...I would only want new photos to have to be synched across the network - it might be there's a better solution for this than owncloud

I can confirm that it does work on the RPi. I have it running on one of mine right now :-)

From the bittorrent sync forums, it sounds as though you install just as per any other linux installation.

Reports have been that it uses a fair whack of the Pi's CPU, but I guess that's to be expected.

Yes, I just started trying it, syncing mp3s between my desktop and the RasPi music box in the kitchen, which has a USB HDD attached. The USB HDD is an ext4 filesystem, for no good reason.

Indexing several thousand mp3s (both computers already had almost identical directories), about 30 GB worth, put my RasPi at 100% CPU for several hours. It also seemed to crash either the RasPi or its wireless connection several times. Now that everything is indexed, it seems to be running smoothly and RasPi is down to normal CPU usage. It did sync a few things that had gotten different between the two machines.

So I'd say it's usable, but has a ways to go to really work well on RasPi. Seems worth playing with config files (the GUI config options are spare) or recompiling to try to get a little more control.

We could use it as nice little stress test then :)

I'd expect it to max out when doing initial sync but if it works nicely at other times then it could make a nice little auto=backup facility :)

It did better with just synchronizing new files from the desktop to the Pi. ~15 GBs transferred so far without problems. So I think it's just indexing large directories on the Pi side that caused problems.

Once all the kinks get ironed out I think it would be a good idea for an installable image to be created and made available in the "Downloads" section. It could be stripped of most of the other programs so it only functioned as a backup device. The image should be pretty small. Just a thought.
It isn't yours if you can't hack it.
