Speed of Burning SD cards - Help

Tue Mar 26, 2013 12:25 pm

I recently started using h2testw to test the speed of the SD cards I've been buying.

I was shocked at finding 700-800 KByte/s was the norm of measuring Class 4 and Class 10 SD cards.

Now using Win32 Disk Imager burning an Sd card at 758KByte/s ! I suspect my USB adapter !

What sort of speeds to other members achieve ? And what adapters are being used ?

My PC is only a year and a half old has 8GB ram etc etc

A thoughts very very welcome !

A worried,

:? :? :? :? :?

Look for updated drivers from the PC manufacturer if it's built in. If straight USB look for issues there. I don't remember my speeds but they were in the MB range maybe 5, 7 (All class 4) been a while since I looked. Mostly the Rasbian image took about 20 minutes tops to get to the card.

The other thing is speeds of SD Cards are not guaranteed just a standard but should be not so far out that you see speeds like that I would think.

I also don't think the adapters are an issue mostly the built in ones tend to come with generic drivers like in laptops and searching make and model you should find a solution online to how others got theirs working properly. Same could be said for USB driver issues.

Many many thanks for responding !

I tried it also on a Vista Laptop with the same adaptor and got the same rubbish results !

Its a 'noname' adaptor with SD/MMC/RS-MMC USB2.0 written on it.

how do I go about getting a better driver for that or the USB port ?

Its an extender giszmo that gives 4 extra ports.

Warning: Only 3738 of 3739 MByte tested.
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 11.3 MByte/s
Reading speed: 15.9 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

It was the adaptor a different adaptor yielded this.
