According to the front page there is a FreeBSD unofficial release for the Raspberry Pi.
I had friends who prefer FreeBSD over Linux but to be honest I don't see any real difference.
Can anyone tell me what are the benefits of running FreeBSD over Raspbian for the Raspberry Pi??

Probably none at the moment - the *BSD ports are under development (read: not everything works) When they get further along, I assume it will be personal preference that drives the decision.
