Do not upgrade VLC [solved]

Sat May 02, 2020 11:44 am

Today a new VLC version appeared in the Raspbian repository (3.0.100+deb10u1).

This version does not contain the RPi-specific patches! Do not upgrade to it!

The maintainers of the Foundation repository should care about the problem. A new version was anounced recently so it seems to be the right time to create an update.

Edit May, 3rd: The Foundation published version 3.0.100+deb10u1+rpt1 which will take precendence. Problem solved.

I second that.. I did the upgrade, and lost h264 hw decoding. Any ideas how to roll back?

Thanks very much for the warning! I have now locked all my vlc packages. It would be great if someone gives Raspbian users the all clear when a new modded version is released

Not much that can be done about it.

Security fixes bump our version intentionally and I get an automatic notification when it happens.

Even if we prioritized our patches over security fixes, this update bumped the upstream version of the package, so the only alternative would be for us to bump the epoch of the package. That's not an option because it would make us eternally responsible for maintaining the package even after our patches are upstreamed.

Unfortunately, unless somebody has a better approach in mind, that means these things will happen sometimes

Interestingly, I was going to try (fresh) installing VLC on my RPI4, but seeing this thread, it seems I'd get a broken version of it.

So, the question becomes: What hocus pocus would I have to do to install it and ensure that I get a previous, working version?

An update to VLC has just been released via apt.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Just to confirm, are you saying that it is now safe to fresh-install it?

I'm also running VLC on a RPi 4B/4G and experience none of your problems.

Raspbian Buster is the currently supported release ( Raspberry Pi Foundation / Trading ), and has been since June 2019.

Re: Do not upgrade VLC - it happened again

Today I see a new VLC version in the update list (3.0.11-0+deb10u1). But this is again a default Raspbian version without the RPi specific modifications.

Do not upgrade to it! You will lose HW acceleration and all other RPi-specific modifications.

The RPT repository maintainers should publish a new version as soon as possible.

(seriously) just out of curiosity, in which sense are you using the word "should" here?

In the sense of:

1) "ought to" (as in, "You should eat your vegetables")

or

2) "(probably) will" (as in "It should rain tomorrow")

I also lost HW acceleration in VLC after recent update.
How can we get back the HW acceleration? Is it possible to rollback?

A patched version should've been up for a while now.

Does that mean that it is once again safe to do the usual update/upgrade stuff?
