Chromium 80 on raspbian buster

Sat Mar 28, 2020 10:58 am

I would like chromium 80 on my raspberry pi 4 running buster. Any idea when this will arrive in the official repository? It seems to be in the general buster debian repository. Or is there any other alternative methods to get chromium 80? Thanks

Raspbian Buster's chromium-browser is heavily tweaked from the standard Debian Repository version, until Raspberry Pi Trading have the resources ( lacking in current lockdown ) it is a waiting game.

Is there any reason why chromium-browser version 78 is not suitable for your needs ??

Thanks for this. It's mainly because Microsoft teams website version says it's an incompatible browser, and also the whereby.com video conferencing site doesn't function correctly. I was hoping that an updated browser might help.

There's another topic on this forum and I think the conclusion was that Teams will not (fully) run on chromium-browser.
Everything apart from sound (and maybe video) works fine.

You need chrome or one of the MS browsers (IIRC) to get full functionality.

This post is only a week old, surprised you never found in your searches:

As I said teams was only part of the problem. My understanding was that Chrome 80 improved a lot of video interaction sites. Probably just me getting used to the fact that things that work in Ubuntu on x86 don't necessarily work on raspbian in arm. Thanks for your time.

I downloaded v80 .deb directly from the official repository and everything works fine (didn't try MS teams). I would say even better performance than with raspbian v78. On v78 videos would tear a lot at 1080p, so had to run desktop at 720p 59.94Hz to view videos on YouTube. v80 handles 1080p no problem.

Still not able to get Widevine to work though.

To get v80, I had to remove existing chromium and install some dependencies. Code for reference:

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove chromium-browser
sudo apt install libminizip1 libre2-5 chromium-common
sudo dpkg -i chromium_80.0.3987.149-1_deb10u1_armhf.deb

Apparently, Google have been putting a lot of effort in to improving the video pipeline in Chrome, so you are seeing the benefits of that. Should get even better once our changes (mostly relevant to earlier models) are ported across, which is currently being done. Keeping decent performance in those older models is very important.

I installed Chromium 80 with these steps, but didn't get improvements in screen tearing.

Also, if you want to watch Netflix, Amazon etc. in Chromium then I recommend watching ETA PRIME or Novaspirit Tech's recent videos on the matter.

Thanks! This worked for me, and it's been a big help. v78 was dying hard on some problematic pages on SesameStreet.org, which was very frustrating to me and to my child. The pages are still problematic on v80, but it can recover with a simple page refresh.

Very recently, the Raspbian repositories have added a second chromium browser.
The first one is chromium-browser (hw-accelerated, not latest version)
The second one is directly from Debian's repositories (not optimized for RPi, but kept more up to date. Currently v80)

For more details see this topic: viewtopic.php?f=91&t=273504
Want to make your own Raspbian image?
  • Hard way: Mess with confusing terminal commands.
  • Easy way: Let Pi-Power-Tools do it all for you!
Boot your image in a VM, Flash from the Internet at top speed, Mount (to drop files in), Edit partitions, Shrink/Expand, Repair, and more. Enjoy! :)
