Broken Canadian Mirror muug.ca

Wed Jan 01, 2020 12:37 am

A fresh Raspbian OS image will not let me upgrade the packages.

In my /etc/apt/sources/list I had:

Code: Select all

deb http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi
When using raspberrypi.org in Vancouver Canada, it seems it defaults to using the mirror: muug.ca

Upgrading the packages resulted each and every time in the same error. (Note: apt-get update worked, but apt-get upgrade would error out on the specified deb.

Code: Select all

Err:1 http://muug.ca/mirror/raspbian/raspbian buster/main armhf openjdk-11-jdk-headless armhf 11.0.5+10-1~deb10u1
  Connection failed [IP: 208.81.1.244 80]
E: Failed to fetch http://muug.ca/mirror/raspbian/raspbian/pool/main/o/openjdk-11/openjdk-11-jdk-headless_11.0.5+10-1~deb10u1_armhf.deb Connection failed [IP: 208.81.1.244 80]
I decided to manually set the mirror to

Code: Select all

deb https://raspbian.freemirror.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi
After which the upgrade started to work.

Please note: this was not an issue with the network, or with reachability of muug.ca because my RPi was able to update the list, and fetch packages other than the openjdk package.

Mirrors sometimes time out. Rather than editing your apt configuration, try again later.

The muug mirror seems to be a tad slow today.

I did try on several occasions, always error on the same file... it is not a network issue. The mirror has an issue.

Right. I remember a couple of users having issues with this repository over the last week or so.

Mirror is fine (if slow) this morning:

Code: Select all

$ HEAD 'http://muug.ca/mirror/raspbian/raspbian/pool/main/o/openjdk-11/openjdk-11-jdk-headless_11.0.5+10-1~deb10u1_armhf.deb'

It's currently showing it'll take 3 days to download, but the connection's active.

Using the default mirror settings some of my packages come from raspbian.mirror.colo-serv.net when the Manitoba Unix User Group mirror is suffering from slow electrons.

Did you try let it finish?

Also, if you fetch any other package from muug.ca you will see it is fast enough.

Again, it is not a network or bandwidth issue.

Yep. It's still going, though. The server seems to burp out 8478 bytes (or some other multiple of 2826 bytes) every 22 seconds or so.

Maybe nab the file from http://raspbian.mirror.colo-serv.net/ra ... _armhf.deb and do a manual sudo dpkg -i on it. The volunteers at MUUG might need to work off their new year hangovers.

The mirror director configuration needs to be updated to take this faulty mirror out of the pool. Not sure how to ping plugwash to do it though since PMs don't work on this forum.

Thing is, the mirror seems to work fine for other files. Canada is such a network backwater that we can use all the mirrors that we can get.

In a recent update, I see I'm getting packages from http://raspbian.freemirror.org/ . I'd never seen this Canadian host before, so I suspect MUUG might've been rotated out.

Same problem and not rotated out for me. Still early after the new years hangovers tho. :) I guess I'll wait longer. :D

It finally completed: 16 h 39 m, or 422 kB/s. Checks out identical to another copy downloaded from another mirror.

I'd be fine waiting 16 hours, but mine keeps failing. It's been frustrating that I can't set my system up for 2 days now (Found this article yesterday but only chose to engage today).

How come Canada is limited to Canadian mirrors, why not share the US mirrors? I can't get off the muug.ca server and it fails every time I try it. I have a new Pi that is essentially useless to me without the updates. I'm just trying to install nodejs, subvversion, imagemagick cmake and a bunch of other packages...

Is there just a way to change it? I tried changing my local to the United States to see if that would change which sets of mirrors I use to no avail....

The mirror director will still prefer a closer mirror.

The geolocation is done on the server side. It determines where you are from your IP address so changing your locale does nothing.

You can force it to a specific server by editing /etc/apt/sources.list and changing where it says http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ stolk mentions a working mirror in the first post of this thread. You should backup the sources.list file before editing it and restore it when the muug.ca mirror is removed from the pool.

Cool, so a VPN might work as a work around. thanks!

Cool, will probably try that... and yeah, backup is essential when changing these things, but thanks for the reminder. ;)

Hi, I'm one of the server admins for "muug.ca".

We experienced some hardware issues, and are running the server right now in a mode that significantly degrades performance for anyone accessing files on the mirror.
Since we're all volunteers, and I'm currently the only person with access to the datacenter, and I've been sick as a dog since just before Christmas... it's taken quite a bit longer to deal with the problem than it normally would have.

I do now see why RaspberryPi users are more heavily affected than everyone else, though - I don't think any of our other mirrored distros has us as the default country mirror!

With some luck, we'll see some improvements over the weekend as I replace hardware, and then a bit more improvement sometime next week as we move the disk cache to NVMe.

Sorry for the inconvenience,
-Adam

I have just disabled muug.ca's entry in the mirror redirection system, please get in touch when things are back to normal so I can re-enable it.

Technically speaking it isn't, if the mirror redirector doesn't find any canadian mirror with the file in question then it will use mirrors elsewhere, or even as a last resort send the file directly.

The problem is that while the software that runs the mirror redirector has the ability to send fallback URLs through extra headers, APT has no mechanism to use them. I have filed a bug report requesting it years ago, but it has never seen any activity.

Thanks for the explanation, and yep, I've seen that a few times. no worries.
