Pi Zero W: Max. number of WiFi clients?

Sun Oct 27, 2019 8:21 am

I have a Raspberry Pi Zero W configured as an access point.

How many clients can be connected simultaneously?

The Pi will not be connected to the Internet. Communication is low traffic, probably mostly text messages being submitted via get-requests from the clients to a Node.js web server running on the Pi.

How many clients are you planning to connect?

Or is a Raspi 4 the better choice?

The software that runs on the Pi would do almost nothing, but I need a stable connection for the 25 ESP-32. Plus there will be a PC connected, which accesses a light weight Node.js application that runs on the Pi. So in total it's actually 26 devices.

Thinking more about the problem, I guess an OpenWrt router is more suitable, plus I hope it doesn't have the typical Pi issue with storage corruption in case of electricity failure.

I would agree with you. Pi is not very good as a router as it doesn't have connection to external antenna, and the pcb antenna, due to the space constraint, not one of the best designs either.
If a stable connection is important to you, use a standard router with rubber duck antennas.

As others have intimated, the Pi Zero Wifi won't have the range of some options that cost more than its $5 price, but it should support light traffic from dozens of client just fine. I'd give it a try.

For the pi WiFi chip ('Broadcom BCM43438) I've seen limits of 16 or 32 devices mentioned:

https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... -3-hotspot

It's down to both the drivers, and hardware, see this thread for differing limits of various USB WiFi chipsets: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... hp?t=76604
some as low as 7 devices ...

Thanks for the links, very interesting! With USB WiFi adapters I generally did not have good experience running them in AP mode.

Anyhow, I want to play safe here. So I'll use a router, probably a GL.iNet GL-AR750S, plus a PC which runs the server software.
