What possible reasons do you have for doing that?

Scrap your SDCard by writing a fresh copy of Raspbian on it and DO NOT ever run rpi-update ever again unless instructed to do so by an expert from the RPF or RP(T)Ltd.

rpi-update is not a general purpose tool and branch=next is currently a long way back-level (7 months - long before RPi4) behind the current experimental kernel and bootcode.

You'll need to boot from another SDCard to do that.

You'll need to reinstall raspberrypi-kernel and raspberrypi-bootcode in a chroot.

Now run

sudo apt install --reinstall raspberrypi-kernel raspberrypi-bootcode

To undo the damage. That will also get the latest stable kernel and bootcode for you.

It's raspberrypi-bootloader, not bootcode.
