Buster on RPi3B+ no GUI

Hello all raspberries,

Dunno if it was a good idea, but having a fight with it now...

I've 'apt full-upgrade' -ed my RPi3B+ debian stretch to buster...

Apart from some bad PHP Fatal errors that I'm dealing with, the reason I'm posting here is that I've noticed I didn't have an x environement through VNC anymore... :/

I've tried to reconfigure raspi-config to have a boot straight to Desktop-GUI, yet still end up in CLI.
Also, running startx systematically ends in a :
Server teminated with error (1)
xinit: Giving up
xinit: Unable to connect to X server : connection refused
xinit: server error

Any clues ?

Is running buster on RPi3B+ such an awfull idea ?

To make VNC work when you don't have a HDMI monitor attached then you must first use sudo raspi-config to set a screen resolution to something other than default

What is the default resolution ? mode 85 ?

Anyway, that's not the solution. Switched to mode 16, and only got a smaller screen size version of the same problem
VNC in CLI.

Could it be the video handling of debian arm buster doesn't handle the video caching of RPi3B+ ?
(I've also switched to the old 'Legacy' driver in raspi-config, to no improvement)

Upgrading from Wheezy, Jessie, Stretch to the next release has never been recommended by RPF / RPT.
