I have no problems with waiting for PXE & USB boot in just the same way that I have no problems waiting for the supply chain to catch up with my desire for a RPi4B with 4GB. [Which the household finance director will frown at.]
Hmm, sounds very familiar. I think I should put my spare change in a jar labeled Pi4B4
Wonder if I have enough yet? Will start counting tomorrow :D
Just cashed my jar in - £21 so need to buy a bigger jar as this has gone on paint

I'm running all my RPis from USB HDD for six years now, starting it long before the "real" USB boot was introduced.

I always followed this great tutorial (it's a sticky): https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 29&t=44177
This describes the "classic" method: Boot partition on SD card, root FS on the USB drive.

This has always worked and will continue to work.
People should simply stop complaining.

Yeah, would be nice to do it without using an SD card though!

I'm also waiting for this. My SD card sucks.

So just use the SD card as a boot loader and run the O/S from a USB HDD / SSD with a larger swap size...

Baffled why you would not :?: :o as the few extra seconds detecting the HDD / SSD is nothing - even on the Pi 3B is only 2-3 seconds.

You can boot from USB, just not directly.
Use the sd card to transfer the boot to the USB just as previous RPIs did.
see: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 29&t=44177

work is being done on finishing a more extensive boot mechanism, but fullproof USB booting (finding bootcode on a memory device, even behind a hub, and in the presence of other USB memory devices) does NOT have priority, first NETBOOT will be finished. when fullproof USB booting is ready it will be announced in the blog, you will be informed when its ready!

enough has been said on this subject, to exhaustion, you are all starting to sound like a broken record, so on advice from several reporters asking for this I'm locking this thread!
