Raspberry Pi getting weird local IP address?

Thu Nov 29, 2012 12:10 am

I have my RasPi plugged in via Ethernet - it seems to be connected, but when I type “ip addr show” I get some weird local IP address (like 127.0.0.1); also although I seem able to get packages from the internet via command line, when I load up a web browser I can't browse to any websites....

Any ideas??

Genius! Thanks. Not sure where I read that first command......

Is it fairly easy to set RasPi to a static IP so I can always SSH to it? Guess it's probably covered somewhere on these forums already.....

Its even easier doing it in your router if it allows reserved IP's. In my Edimax just let the router give you an IP and click on reserve and apply, then it always gets the same IP address.

Yep good advice, I did this shortly after I posted my last reply :-) At least now I know where my Pi is going to 'be' all the time!

Just for the record, your "weird" IP address - 127.0.0.1 - is a special reserved address known as localhost. It is typically used as a loopback for ping testing and service testing. (you frequently see web-based server consoles called via http://localhost/)

Windows assumes you don't care about this IP and doesn't show it, but LINUX is nice and gives you all the IP information that it has.
I'm only wearing black until they find something darker.

This is really helpful - thanks! :-) Need to get my head around networking basics - it's a good life skill to have these days!!
