How can I upgrade to Raspbian Lite April 2019 version?

Thu Apr 11, 2019 3:06 am

Tried searching for ways to check if I have the April 2019 version, but none of the commands below output what I need:

Code: Select all

$ uname -a
$ lsb_release - a
$ cat /etc/os-release
$ cat /etc/rpi-issue
The last one is the closest one and reports the following:

Code: Select all

Raspberry Pi reference 2018-11-13
Generated using pi-gen, https://github.com/RPi-Distro/pi-gen, 7e0c786c641ba15990b5662f092c106beed40c9f, stage2
But I'm not sure how/when this gets generated.

When running apt-get commands, I get nothing

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get update

Hit:1 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian stretch InRelease
Hit:2 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian stretch InRelease
Reading package lists... Done

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

First and foremost it is not a new version, it is just all the updates since November 2018 rolled into a new point release.

Raspbian Stretch to fully update:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Thanks fruitoftheloom, so much in theory. But doesn't do what was asked.

So what are you expecting it to do?

chromium-browser was released a couple of weeks ago, have been using:

The Raspberry Pi Desktop Splash Screen was updated end of last week, prior to this point release.

VLC was update to 3.0.6 a while ago:

So as I stated it is just a point release and a full update / upgrade of a previous Stretch install will have the same default package versions as this one........

....but you need the "Raspbian Stretch with desktop and recommended software" as Lite has no GUI !

The only difference I see there is that ethtool and rng-tools are now installed as standard. If you want those packages, just install them. The rest of the changes will be picked up with an upgrade.

ethtool is used to query and control network device driver and hardware settings, particularly for wired Ethernet devices.

rng-tools is a set of utilities related to random number generation in kernel.

Nice extras for those who have needed them.....

I usually install ethtool anyway. I find it a bit better than mii-tool in some cases.

Also, if you want the newest kernel, which is 4.19, and not 4.14, just open the terminal and type:

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update
It'll update the kernel and you'll have to reboot. If you have ANY issues after this, then revert back to 4.14. I've been using 4.19 for about two days now, and haven't experienced any issues, for what it's worth.

That is a very bad idea. There's bits in the latest kernel (last week I ran rpi-update) that are broken on 3B and 3A+. That breaks the on-board WiFi. I'm out of the country until tomorrow so this week's update may be better - not tested it.

It's never needed for regular users. It can leave your system unbootable.

DO NOT recommend running rpi-update as you will be very unpopular when it breaks things.
