Error messages from "dist-upgrade"

Tue Dec 11, 2018 6:30 am

Did update/dist-upgrade in Stretch, running in a lxterminal window on the desktop. It seemed to run OK, but produced the following messages at the end:
Setting up policykit-1 (0.105-18+deb9u1) ...
Removed /run/systemd/system/polkit.service.
Setting up raspberrypi-ui-mods (1.20181206) ...
The desktop has been updated.
To apply the updates, please reboot your Pi, and then select one of the options on the Defaults page in Appearance Settings.
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(zenity:5110): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.24-11+deb9u3) ...
Questions:

1) What's up with the stuff about a "Defaults page in Appearance Settings"? How/where is there a "page" in terms of configuring the desktop?

2) Why the zenity errors?

Note regarding #2 above: I was running on the desktop, logged in as "pi", but "sudo'd" to root. I suppose the error happens because some process running as root doesn't have access to the X session. Can this be fixed?

When you reboot (as instructed), all appears to be fine. 3 systems updated with the same information are running without issue.

As instructed by whom???

Anyway, that's not at all the point.

I'm trying to get whoever is in charge to fix this - for their sake, not mine.

Users do not like to see random error messages on their screens.

Lots of superfluous stuff there, but maybe the answer is buried there somewhere.

Who can say?

Just read the section
Desktop configuration

One of the other changes we’ve made this time is one that hopefully most people won’t notice!

If you look in the main menu under Preferences, there is an application called "Appearance Settings". If you launch it, you get a window with tabbed pages, one of which has the title "Defaults". It's really not that hard to find... :)

The key word here is "most".

We have no way of anticipating every single change every Pi user has made to their configuration, and some people do odd things. Much as we try to make everything work as well as possible for everyone, we can't anticipate everything and we can't test against every possible configuration; some people will see glitches. The world is an imperfect place...
