A light web browser !!!

Fri Oct 19, 2018 8:14 am

As a lot people here, I am very unconfortable with a browser in raspbian (Chromium, Firefox, Kweb, midori, ....). If full-featured (Chome/Firefox) runs easily out-of-memory, if low-memory (midori, kweb pack...) is missed featured, and hangs with modern websites.

Accidentally I found a relative light and very functional browser where I wan not searching for: inside a python IDE. Thats, I have not seen reported in main forums:
Thats the great "Eric Python IDE".

Yes, Eric IDE is a really good piece of soft (written in python and QT) to develope python and ruby projects, that has exceptional features that I am not to write here. I found that, searching for a light multiplatform python IDE bacause geany is missing debug tools. But surprisingly, inside it you can find... a relative full feature and light browser in python...
You can install as easy as:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install eric
You will find the browser in the category of "Programing": Eric6 Web Browser (QTWebkit).

With this browser, I can run the huge kodi, home-assistant, and a remote x11vnc connection (lxde) and launch the browser and navigate in a javascript website, without hung for out-of-memory. With chrominum or firefox its absoluteley imposible.

Please give it a try. Sure you´ll be as surpresed as me, ... and ask you why is so unknown.

Not really that surprising: it's just another wrapper around Webkit.

No webkit based browser can display HD video (software only). On Jessie (and heezy) there was a HW accelerated webkit engine (used by epiphany and kweb3), but it was never stable and has been discontinued.

My kweb browser, also a lightweight webkit browser, is directly connected to omxplayer(GUI) and can play web video with full resolution.

Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer
