pygame 1.9.4

Fri Oct 05, 2018 2:49 am

I was simply wondering, since pygame seems to be included in raspbian by the raspberry pi foundation (not the Debian stable version), if it is going to be updated between major raspbian releases? 1.9.4 has been available for months now.

Not that it's really important for anything yet, simply out of curiosity. ;)

Thanks

Precompiled binaries of v1.9.4 are available for Python 3 on Ben Nuttall's piwheels.org
On Stretch you can install them with pip3

I remember taking a look at it and not seeing any major reason to update it. When it's updated in Debian Sid, we could take it from there, but I couldn't justify spending time on it.

Was there anything major I missed while looking at the release announcement?

No no no, nothing major... I was simply curious to know if it was updated between major Raspbian releases.
Knowing that you looked and thought there was no good reason to update it is as good as updating it in my opinion ;)
Thanks

The major thing is support for python 3.7, so this needs to get packaged before the move to buster, hopefully that can be handled Debian side but if that is not possible then a local raspberry pi package will be needed.

Pygame 1.9.4 has now been uploaded to Debian sid but is currently blocked from migrating to buster by a build failure on s390x, I just whipped up a patch for that, hopefully the maintainer uploads it soon.

pygame in debian sid is now building on all architectures, so it should be in debian buster in a few days and raspbian buster a day or so after that.

That's so funny. Nobody would want that on an IBM mainframe. S390X is the big-endian architecture for S/390 and zSeries mainframes that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (millions for the top end) and run commercial & manufacturing systems like banks, insurance, supermarkets and aircraft makers.

Apparently people do want Linux on such machines, otherwise it would have been dropped from the Debian builds, as others have previously. I suspect it is a pretty small use case though and may get dropped later.

I'm guessing Debian check how many downloads there have been from their repositories to decide if a particular architecture is being used.

It's not the Linux piece it's the idea of running pygame.

There's millions of users running virtual penguins on Z/VM (the original virtual machine). They built 30000 virtual machines running Linux390 back in 1995.

So it goes, sometimes it's easier to fix something than to persuade people to remove it, even if it's user-base is probably non-existent.

For better or worse Debian's general practice is that once a package has built succesfully on a release architecture it should only be removed if problems come up which are truly unreasonable fo fix (this one wasn't, it turned out to be a single character typo).
