Switch from Pi2 to Pi3 without a new install of Raspbian

Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:06 am

Hi,

i've installed raspbian stretch on my pi2 and made a lot of settings so i'm glad that all is running well. now i've purchased a raspi pi3b+ and tried booting from the existing image - that failed. this is a known error, as a user told me in the german raspberry pi forum. i updated the raspbian using dist-upgrade and tried it again because i thought a kernel update is enough to have the right driver installed. but booting also failed.

is there any way to get my existing image booting on the pi3 or is a new installation the only way?

If you do a

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep raspberrypi-
and post the result here, I'm thinking someone can verify if your kernel and firmware is too old or if there is another problem.

You could also post the contents of "/boot/cmdline.txt"

If your SD card has the NOOBs installer on it, then NOOBs must be updated as well.
viewtopic.php?t=212452

Probably easier to start fresh however.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Stretch w/ Desktop OS.

yes, a fresh install is possible, but it was hard work to get all the programs to work. i had some problem with some of them on stretch.

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep raspberrypi-

the raspberry-ui-mods version number is different from yours

my RPi3B+'s USB Flash memory native boot Raspbian Stretch system was exported out from an RPi3B microSD NOOBs-Jessie-installed-upgraded-to-stretch system. Last update and upgrade was done last 2018-07-15.
Like you, I wanted to preserve my settings on the packages that was installed before, as a fresh install will be quite a chore....

i tried to update noobs (my system is a dual boot system with 2 raspbian) as described here viewtopic.php?t=212452. now the boot process starts but it hangs. this is the error:
you are in emerrgency mode. after logging in, type journalctl -xb" to view
system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or ^D to
try again to boot into default mode.

cannot open access to console, the root account is locked

press enter to continue.
the pi starts without problems on pi2. maybe it was a problem to reboot on the pi2 after updating noobs?

i fixed the problem. i disabled this line in my fstab and now raspbian starts.

Code: Select all

#UUID=e3913952-81a1-420a-83ab-7ae62809f431 /media/usb ext4 defaults 0 0
but whats wrong with that?

there is also this line

Code: Select all

UUID=d5741696-f814-46fd-8842-95a8f5d66ec3      /media/pi/SETTINGS      ext4    defaults        0       0
but i never added it to the fstab.

Probably because Raspbian with Desktop auto mounts USB drives in /media. And since you forced it to be /media/usb it could not find it.

Return to “Raspbian”
