New RPI 512 MB fails on apt-get upgrade

Sat Oct 20, 2012 1:45 pm

I have just got my new Raspberry PI 512 MB and a completely new SD card and installed Raspbian (2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian.img).
After installing the SD card I am not able to do sudo apt-get upgrade.
It comes with the following error:

Code: Select all

dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
 files list file for package 'libfm-data' is missing final newline
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
I have reinstalled the img on the SD card, however it just comes with the same error - but for different packages. Last time it was manpages.

Try

sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Sorry, I did not mention that I am doing a apt-get update before upgrading.

Personally my first suspision would be a bad SD card.

I just tried another plain new, out of package SD card - still same error but the package it is mentioning is now lxmenu-data.

Edit:
My SD cards is class 10 and not class 4 as suggested on raspberrypi.org - does that matter?

Have you overclocked your Pi? Try running just stock frequencies - no overclock - and see if you still have the same problem.

Class 10 should be compatible, but obviously that advice can vary by brand. I've used SanDisk and Transcend Class 10 cards without too many issues - I do have a 256MB Pi that will corrupt every SD card - Class 10 or Class 4 - if I overclock the core frequency, but two other 512MB Pi with overclocked cores have no problems using the same cards.

I have several Class 10 cards from different manufacturers and they all work. It seems that other people are having similar problems - see this thread: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 66&t=17923

No it is just stock frequencies.

They seem to have problems with Booting.
The device boots without problems, it is only when I am trying to apt-get upgrade/install that it has problems.

Thanks for posting this. I guess I've been lucky. I have a SanDisk 16GB class 10 card and haven't run into any of these problems. Though synaptic didn't play nice, aptitude has been beautifully behaved.

PS - I too have one of the new 512 MB cards, and it's been overclocked to medium (though the high setting caused a corrupted card :( - you live you learn).

Luck?

I'm still having problems.
Is it possible that it may be a hardware problem?
Something with the PSU or the Raspberry Pi itself?

maybe

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get autoclean  && sudo apt-get autoremove
could help.

I am using an old Apple iPod USB power supply.
Says Output: 5V - 1A on it - guess that should be fine?

I had a RasPi that had similar problems. The cards worked fine in my other RasPii. But one would cause errors every time it was written too. You may be having a similar issue. You may need to return that board.

That RasPi actually flew under the radar for a while. I was using it with a USB HDD with my rootfs on it. No errors to the HDD. But any time it wrote to the SD card it corrupted it. It only really started to show the problem when I installed stuff to the rootfs on a SD card.

For some reason I dont know, it seems to work fine after I've used win32diskimager instead of dd on Mac OSX.
Thanks for all your suggestions though!
