RPI 3 board -- Web Browser Video Playback & Hardware Accelerations

Sat Dec 16, 2017 6:23 am

Hi All,

In web browser, in our website, we receive the video and audio data, play back using HTML 5 player.
Can we add the RPI 3 board video hardware acceleration to HTML player? Then how to add the hardware acceleration?

-Thanks.

chromium-browser on Raspbian Stretch supports HW decoding of web video, but this is restricted to H264 encoding and the usable container formats are also very limited. MP4 containers should work.

What about the Raspbian jessie OS? In this, whether chromium browser supports HW acceleration?

-Thanks.

A fully updated Raspbian Jessie uses the same chromium-browser......................

It's the same in Jessie, but there are also epiphany and kweb3 which support HW decoding of web video (more formats, but the engine is not really stable).

kweb (all versions, both on Stretch and Jessie) supports using omxplayer overlays on browser pages, which is much more efficient but requires specially built web pages. It can use all codecs and container types supported by omxplayer. If the kweb suite is installed, this method can also used in other browsers.

Chromium browser is installed. How to confirm that HW acceleration is enabled?

-Thanks.

To check for Hardware acceleration you need to open your chromium browser and type the following:

- chrome://gpu

Return to “Raspbian”
