Upgrading 2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian broke SD card

Thu Oct 11, 2012 1:00 pm

Hi, this is the third time that i try to install raspbian on a SD card but apt-get upgrade broke my system.

First card was a Kingston microSD 16GB class 4(8GB model reported to work in wiki).
Second card was a Sandisk 4GB SD class 2
Third card was a Kingson microSD 4GB unknow class(probabily 2)

Installation from OSX and first boot are fine, but after some operations or after apt-get update the mmcblk0p2 fs has I/O errors, errors, sysem files corrupted etc etc. sometimes recoverable, sometimes not. If not, the system wont boot anymore and a new install is required.

Is my raspberry pi broken? The power supply the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1's one, rated up to 2A.

Any help would be apreciated!

Are you overclocking? There are some known problems where an overclocked system can cause file system corruption on heavy IO.

I have had this myself a couple of times. It's always been after an apt-get upgrade which included new firmware, every time I've resorted to reflashing the SD card, then the update works.

Sorry I can't help, but I can at least add a +1 "this has happened to me after an upgrade"

Nope, no overclock, i tried once but this definetely broked up my system even before the reboot!

I've used a multimeter and the voltage on my raspberry is ~4,85V

Also, this appened frequently with Arch Linux too, i can't immagine that i used 3 SD card ALL incompatible!

I've encountered the same problem as the you. it seems that we got special pis.
I have tries the 2012-08-16-wheezy-raspbian and it works good. however it crashed after apt-get update and upgrade. then I burned Fedora remix to SD card. it works great.

guys in the down below thread got the similar problem

Yesterday I decided to try out Raspbian instead of Arch Linux. I downloaded 2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian and by using win32-diskimager I wrote img on my SD-card (Platinum 8GB Class 10). Everything seemed to be fine, to the moment of upgrade option. After it, the reboot command hanged my raspberry. Further attempts of restart didn't help.

Unfortunately, damage to SD Card was more powerful than I expected. I could read img from it, but I couldn't write anything.
Any attempts of formating (by using Windows tool, SDFormatter, flashnul) ended up with failure. Even tools on Linux (Ubuntu) weren't able to format it.

I gave up. I bought new SD Card, wrote wheezy from August on it and I am not upgrading it anymore ;).

However, if anyone has some solution for my broken filesystem on SD card, i will be grateful.

Greets,
Lukas

Where do you get the older images from? I only see the 09-18 image on the website at the moment.

Return to “Raspbian”
