Just tested with VLC 3.0.2 ... still no joy, not with MMAL nor with OMX-IL. :(

FYI, as of Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2 (Xenial) this done already, you just need to set the outputs.

Not on Raspbian. See this thread: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=142905
Unfortunately, no-one at Videolan seems to show any interest in this issue.

Yes I did.
I was running as root, i.e. "sudo su" .... yes I know, don't go there (!)

So it did not work under root.

Why are you using sudo to run the file that has sudo for the command inside it?

Provide compiled binary or don't bother at all.
Bonus points for getting it into the Raspbian repository.

It's not like this build is using some arcane optimisations that run only on your own Pi, if there were any.
BTW has any programmer even tried to publish his software to the official repo or is it so restrictive that it doesn't allow it?
There are countless projects that are PITA to install.. (go on and compile OpenMW for the next 72 hours, add repositories, try to steal packages from other distributions and so on)
It has to end, I guess?

As a sidenote, I am a far seer, a crowd of angry people is going to gather up to burn me on a stake for expressing my opinions, as it sure hurt their feelings, as it always seems to happen nowadays. Grow up.

I agree with you - this "providing it in kit form with (lots of) assembly required" is no good.

But they will tell you that it is all we have at the moment. And they refuse to explain further.

The point is that Linux is supposed to be progressing beyond this "kit" approach. As long as it does, the Windows people will be right to look down on it.

Anyway, I predict certain (important) people will not like your post.

@Tichun & n67:

I don't like your belligerent tone. Did you ever provide something useful to the community yourself?

The RPi has been built for education and learning. What's so bad about providing a tutorial about building a package?

Following it you create a VLC version, which
1) is newer than the one in the Stretch repository
2) uses armv7 optimization for RPi2/3
3) adds GPU support using OMX

Because of 1) and 2) it won't find it's way into the Raspbian (armv6hf) repository.
3) is working, but not completely stable - in VLC 3.x versions it doesn't work at all and the VLC developers don't seem to be interested in fixing OMX or MMAL support. I would not recommend adding an unstable version to an official repository.

Feel free to create a package and make it available somewhere. I've done that in the past for a number of packages and will continue to do so. For a number of reasons I have decided not to offer a VLC+GPU package for download.

And if you are not happy with the Debian/Raspbian approach (stability first), you are free to choose another Linux distribution like ARCH which follows a different philosophy.

first and foremost, thank you for the tutorial, is quite useful for those who want to compile VLC. But i have a question.

Why do you disable OpenGL??? It works just fine with opengl, in fact using Output OpenGL GLX, it behaves like it does in any x86/x64 system..

Instead of

Code: Select all

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-omxil --enable-omxil-vout --enable-rpi-omxil --disable-mmal-codec --disable-mmal-vout --enable-gles2
just a plain

Code: Select all

./configure
Will do the trick and at the first start instead of selecting "OpenMAX IL video output" use "OpenGL GLX video output (XCB)" Then the videos will play the right speed and inside the windows, which means full use of the controls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BAWH-e3DE4 Short video, PI 3 using Open Gl GLx as output and as you can see it works great.

1) A simple "./configure" does not include the use of HW decoding (OMX or MMAL).
2) OpenGL is in alpha state and disabled by default. It is not compatible with a lot of other applications/frameworks using the GPU.
3) I do not disable it in my configuration at all.
4) Without GPU support (OpenMax) you cannot play HD videos. SD videos may work, e.g. with SDL output inside a window.

You are right i was looking at other code line... and :o yes i'm able to play up to 720p 60fps... 1080p just black screen... So time to compile it again...

Hi.
Absolutely fantastic job. ! I've always used VLC as my favourite media player, on Windows, but recently, after buying a RPi 3 B+, had an absolute nightmare trying to run it. I followed your instructions to the letter, and wow... after a few stuttery moments, it ran. Fantastic. Thank you so much. I'm completely new to all this stuff, so please excuse me. I'm having a couple of niggly problems popping up. I'm getting 3 Display Errors : Failed to change zoom... Failed to set on top... and... Failed to set Fullscreen. I'm sure it's something incredibly simple that I've overlooked, so I'll take a good look at my Settings. Thank you so much again for an incredible job. ! :D Cheers. Bill.

These errors are normal since VLC does not feature full options to control the HW-accelerated output in terms of scaling and such.
However, what it can do is using full screen by setting the Aspect-Ratio, Try this setting from the Video menu.
