Can I move the sd-card from rpi2 to rpi3

Thu Sep 14, 2017 2:12 pm

Hi
My old rpi 2 was broken, and i got it replaced with a new rpi3

Can I still use the same sd card with my new rpi3 ?
I had some software running on it, and I have no backup of the data.
Therefore it would be nice if i could continue to use the same card without reinstalling the OS.

It depends...

If you installed a bare image and you regularly updated / upgraded it will probably work.
If it's a Noobs install and it's a Noobs version from before the Pi3 was released it will not work.

So the best thing to do is to just try it.
If it doesn't work then you should grab your spare SD card and install Raspbian on that.
Pop your old card in a (cheapo) external USB SD card reader, mount the old card and move your stuff to the new card.
