You will have to be more specific in what you are trying to achieve, otherwise we can't help you!
Tell us what exactly you are trying to do, what you did, and what it isn't working for you.

Kodi 18 will be available when the stable version is released. We might provide test versions of Kodi 18 in a separate repo when the beta/rc versions become available. We will post it here then.

Re: [Guide] Kodi on Raspbian Stretch

Sat Mar 17, 2018 11:05 pm

Greetings! I am fairly new to the Raspberry Pi. I purchased two RPi 3 Model B units. One of them has the previous build of Stretch, which I have used for a week. For the second one, I'm trying to decide what Raspbian build to put on it, either the 3/13 build of Stretch or the last build of Jessie.

I've been running the build of Kodi that was available last weekend when I first started up my Pi, and I downloaded it from the command line. It's been so-so. It seems that every two time I start Kodi on the Pi, I get a black screen, and every time I close Kodi, the Pi seems to lock up. I tried switching to the non-GL graphics driver, but I'm still getting black screens as before. I have 256 MB of RAM set aside for the GPU as well.

When Kodi does work, it works very well. It seems a lot more stable than the version of Krypton I run on my Windows 7 laptop, which the second Pi is going to replace.

My understanding is that Kodi ran better on Jessie, which is why I'm considering using that build of Raspbian. Is there something I'm missing?

Am running Kodi 17.6 on top of latest Raspbian Stretch with Desktop on a Raspberry Pi Zero WH. Files accessed from NAS, Raspberry Pi3 samba share and Windows 10 share folders. No problems so far.... :D

Yep, Kodi runs the same on Jessie and Stretch, after some testing I didn't notice any noticeable performance difference. And Kodi on Jessie is still 17.3, it won't be updated any further and misses some h265 optimizations present on Kodi 17.6 in Stretch.

I upgraded my RPi2 to Stretch and Kodi 17.6 back in March without incident. 99% of videos are playing fine, as before.

The problem I've found happens at certain parts of 1080p 50 fps h.264 videos. It's sort of like a stuttering/freezing, but I don't see high CPU, low buffers, dropped/skipped frames etc. It happens reproducibly at the same points for a given the video. Portions that appear stuttery will play smoothly for a little while if I do a short jump backwards. In an hour long video there are maybe a dozen points of stuttering, and the stuttering usually resolves itself after about a minute, and usually at the point of a scene change. I suspect Kodi 17.6 might be more dependant on frequent keyframes, but I don't really know how to diagnose this further.

I tried increasing GPU memory from 160 to 256 with no effect. I restored the backup image of my Jessie/Kodi 17.3 install and these stuttery videos play fine.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking of trying to install the old Kodi 17.3 on Stretch, as I rather not keep using Jessie.

EDIT: changed references of "Wheezy" to "Jessie", I can't keep the silly names straight...

All kind of 1080p h264 till 60fps should play fine. Can you please post a sample of that video and your kodi log playing it ?

First available version on Stretch is Kodi 17.4, there is no easy way to downgrade it further. You can create a small sample of the video file with ffmpeg or handbrake, or at least provide it´s mediainfo. And your problem should appear in a Kodi log with debug enabled.

Hi Guys,

I'm using the Stretch version of Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi 2 and Kodi V17.6.

First of all, Kodi doesn't start with CLI, I changed the boot option on raspi-config and created the service, and after restarting I can only see the black screen on my TV but kodi is not starting up.

Second, starting after the desktop is working fine (using the @kodi), but it is impossible to use, it's TOOOOOO SLOW, I can't even change from "Movies" to "TV Series"... this take 1 minute...

Have anyone any idea on what could be my problem ?

I updated all the GPU Memory size, enabled the camera on raspi-config and so on...
If you need log for anything, how can I get those ?

You are on Raspbian Sid/Buster not Raspbian Stretch. Raspbian Sid is the Debian testing branch, which at some point will become the next Debian version, Buster. That is probably your problem.

Yes, it runs slow because it is the generic Kodi version from Debian, not the RPi optimized one.
I don't know how to downgrade an entire OS, that won't be easy.

Hmm, I can re-do everything... where is the link to download the correct version? I got the version from the raspberryPi site and isn't the right one...

You are still using Kodi from Debian so, you are changing something in your instalation. Probably you are adding extra repositories. What do you have in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ ?

Yes, "buster" in that line is the problem. Like I said earlier Buster is the Debian next release which is currently the testing version. Replace it with "stretch", update, remove Kodi and install it again.

Hmmm, ok!

Remove it with purge?

Will try it... meanwhile, what about trying to start with CLI and getting the problem X11 was not found, there is something wrong?

Yes, remove it with purge. The Debian Kodi version works only on a desktop environmet (X11), hence that error, but as soon you install the Raspbian Stretch version, it will work from the cli also.

does kodi support VP9 stream?

got a vp9 file, omxplayer can not play at all.
kodi can play but choppy and A/V not sync, or Pis just less power?
btw, mpv-rpi do the good job for vp9 format.

Return to “Raspbian”
