If you use gcc, its up from 4.9 to 6.3 now, much better.
The release was available for testing. Just not particularly well publicised how to do it. Dougie has been using it for months. We've never done external release candidates.bensimmo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 8:52 amI still "personally" think they should have released this release as a preview/RC/testing version. Giving the early users a go at finding the bugs (as they have done) and then build on top a month to get thing working with it.
Then gone for the fanfare and dropping Jessie
Rather than the bugs being found and diluting the release somewhat.
I'm sure more bugs will come along though.
I meant as an official testing release, of your release.jamesh wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 8:58 amThe release was available for testing. Just not particularly well publicised how to do it. Just much newer versions of everything. Kernels you can upgrade on Jessie anyway, along with firmware updates, so Jessie can still be kept up to date in many respects. Just be easier to use Stretch to keep updated.
In the months that I tested it there was nothing I found that didn't work on any of my Stretch machines. I've found more bugs in the kernel than in any version of Raspbian.bensimmo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:19 amI meant as an official testing release, of your release.
I know you've never done it*, but it's a larger jump than normal here.
Just because you never have, doesn't mean it's not a good idea.
Anyway, reasons to upgrade. Anything from the Pi specific point of view?
*Other than nightlies a long time back, but this was done well in another thread about the difficulties.
