What are some reasons to upgrade from jessie to stretch?

Fri Aug 25, 2017 5:46 am

What are some new features in stretch that makes it compelling to upgrade from jessie to stretch?

If you use the GUI it should be safer, they pulled a lot from root usage iirc.

A lot of the backend* programs are now Python3 compatible and not just python2

But for me it'll be access to newer versions of everything Python3.5 must help me, mustn't it, lags by only a version now.
Arduino will be up to date(er) as will Fritzing (hopefully that an now be a pre installed Raspbian program for education).

They say speed, that's probably all the optimization of newer updates.

I don't think anything 'Pi' is newer though.

Reasons not to update are,
Some thing will change, no doubt, as they get feedback of this release.
Issues will be fixed.
Documents may need to catch up as do built on top of Raspbian programs. (Kodi, RetroPie, octopi, etc)

* No idea what they call them in debian land, stuff you use but don't realise it.

If you use gcc, its up from 4.9 to 6.3 now, much better.
Also now only one (major) version behind 7.2.

I have had zero issues with stretch on several Pi's, and if there were problems, I would trust the RPF to fix them very quickly - it is a well supported, quality distro IMO. With the huge user base the Pi/Raspbian has, any issues are found early on.

I still "personally" think they should have released this release as a preview/RC/testing version. Giving the early users a go at finding the bugs (as they have done) and then build on top a month to get thing working with it.
Then gone for the fanfare and dropping Jessie :-)

Rather than the bugs being found and diluting the release somewhat.
I'm sure more bugs will come along though.

The release was available for testing. Just not particularly well publicised how to do it. Dougie has been using it for months. We've never done external release candidates.

I meant as an official testing release, of your release.
I know you've never done it*, but it's a larger jump than normal here.
Just because you never have, doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

Anyway, reasons to upgrade. Anything from the Pi specific point of view?

Just much newer versions of everything. Kernels you can upgrade on Jessie anyway, along with firmware updates, so Jessie can still be kept up to date in many respects. Just be easier to use Stretch to keep updated.

Internally we will be moving over the stretch, so any fixes will be based on that in the future.

In the months that I tested it there was nothing I found that didn't work on any of my Stretch machines. I've found more bugs in the kernel than in any version of Raspbian.

I've not been able to test the generally available version because the release of it clashed with the run up to the Great American Eclipse of 21st Aug 2017. I'm back in Blighty on Sunday morning (assuming nothing bad happens with tomorrow's efforts by Delta Airlines from ATL to LHR).

Such as Python versions now being 2.7.13 and 3.5.3 ( were 2.7.9 and 3.4.2 ).
